Henry, Arsene And Anelka

Reading the Sunday’s was an interesting exercise in how far a point can be stretched. Rather like The Master in Doctor Who, it seems that the assembled football hacks have undergone some mass hypnosis, swallowed all of Henry’s interview(s) about leaving as the truth without questioning anything. Perhaps it is because what he said reflected the scaremongering that they are perpetuating; the implosion at the Club is happening with a great speed on the back pages but frustratingly for them, the situation is not being reflected at the Club.

The reasons for Henry leaving; you know them, he has imparted them often enough in recent weeks so why do I have the nagging feeling that he did not tell the whole truth over the weekend? More importantly, am I concerned with those reasons, unless they are fundamental to the Club and the way it is run, as a whole and not just in the case of Thierry Henry? The answer is ‘not really’. He has his reasons for going, he has made his choice and I wish him well in the future. I do not buy the Dein and Wenger arguments as a reason for going, they are too insubstantial for me. A footballer knows that at some point in his career the manager will change so why throw it into the mix unless it is to divert away from the real reason. I would have no less respect for Henry if he had come out and said, “I am going because I don’t think that I will win the Champions League at Arsenal and that is what I really want to do”. You cannot argue with that sort of reasoning, it is about personal ambition something that everyone has.

New angles for the media to explore come out of the woodwork this morning though with Stan Kroenke apparently wanting a meeting with Danny Fiszman to know the strategic policies of the Board. Which is a bizarre thing for The Daily Telegraph to claim as surely he would have discussed them with Lord Peter and Edelman when they met in New York recently? Could it be that that the ones who really want to know are the media because the Club and Kroenke have passed no comment on their exchange of views? It is unlikely that Kroenke will say much because of his words carrying impact in the financial markets so it remains up to the Board to pass comment. Which I doubt very much that they will. An interesting angle for the media to take is that Kroenke has invested in the Club which I have to say is news to me. He has bought shares which is his investment but has he funded anything through the Club? The last I heard, his offer of transfer funds had been politely declined, probably because the Board had a good idea that Henry was on his way.

The Board meanwhile have decided to offer Arsene a new three year deal this week which is taking a holding position and because it won’t be signed straight away, will fuel more speculation that Wenger is not going to renew his contract. In the eyes of the media, the Board can do no right although no-one seems to be coming up with any information about any possible takeover although rumours are beginning to circulate that Dein will not be involved with a Kroenke bid. But given that the bid is speculation, that means that the media are now speculating about their own speculation. What tangled webs they weave.

Finally for today, the Anelka bid that Arsene is supposed to want to make seems to be crashing down around his ears with the player reportedly unhappy with Henry’s comments about his reasons for leaving and the Board not happy with any bid for the player, which is not surprising given the acrimony that his departure caused although I thought primarily it was DD who was annoyed with one of the brothers and not the player? All of which means that no doubt he will be signed by the end of the week. Or could it all just be speculation?

’til Tomorrow. Unless of course another player leaves…

  1. I think spot on Yogi, the media love to spin the crisis line and stories of implosion. Who is tipping David Bond off about Kroneke’s concerns. I’m sure he wants to meet Fiszman because he is the real barrier to him buying the club. The loss of Henry makes a big hole in the “marketability” of the Arsenal brand although Wenger has always resisted these pressures (we don’t do pre-season tours to the US/Asia) and always been motivated by football reasons.

As for Wenger’s future the acquisition of a 17 year old central defender who he personally went to sign implies he sees himself at the Emirates longer than another 12 months however he has aged this season his behaviour has become more eratic maybe he believes the pressure has become too much. Maybe believes that the premierleague has become distorted by new “investors” and thinks before he retires he too should prove himself at Real Madrid. He was quoted this season as asking for patience from the club and fans to match the loyalty he showed to the club when declining Real’s and other clubs approaches in the past.

  2. Couldn’t agree with you more on the Henry rationale for leaving, it just doesn’t wash – he points to the departure of Dein and the uncertainty over Wenger’s future, but yet joins a club whose own Manager’s position is up for current speculation and where the board can be voted in and out on a regular basis !! Like you whilst still retaining respect for Henry for everything he has achieved with us and for all of the great memories and wishing him all the best for the future. I would have respected him a lot more if he had outlined his actual reasons rather than the smoke screen he offered.

  3. Cutting through the fluff of the weekend YW.

On Anelka; I am tempted that AW does bring him in. He has one year in the PREM under his belt and would presumably slot back in at the club. All weekend the papers and sport shows have spoke of the way players who were left go have not gone on to shine away from Wenger. If he was to return could it be the proving of AW philosophies. If Anelka was to re-capture lost glories mabye others would think twice about buggering off. Would it revitalise Wenger himself?

Then again, I feel that replacing one Gallic shrug with another would not be the right thing to do, not just now.

  4. Wouldn’t it be nice if:
    1. Wenger would clear the speculation by announcing he’s going to sign the contract extension. His habit of leaving it until it expires may retain his power over the board, but it’s bound to unsettle players and put of new signings.
    2. Wenger spoke to the press to calm down their histeria. The less there is to report, the more shit they make up.
    3. Henry’s replacement is announced this week.

    By my reckoning, there’s now £75million in the transfer kitty – Henry £16m + Reyes £12m + Aliadiere £2m + Muamba £4m + Stokes £1m + £40million reserves.

Arsene should be able to unearth a few gems with that kind of wedge.

  5. Why would we want anelka back ??? Am i the only one who thinks he could start sulking again if we fail to get into top 3.

No,from a personal point of view Tevez and Babel would be my perferred combination.Tevez is a warrior and Babel have potential to be as good as Henry.

  6. Joe, its £8m for reyes,1.5 for larson……..sorry if being picky…..

  7. I like your thinking Joe but the 40 mil will only be used if we are in serious finacial straits.

  8. When we have off loaded Reyes and maybe Ljungberg we will have around 30-35 million pounds available.Tevez 20 mil and Babel 6 mil plus a decent defender it all works out and knowing wenger none off the above will be transferred to arsenal and he will not spend half the money mentioned.

  9. les, joe – given Arsenal’s reticence about transfer dealings and particularly the amounts paid or received, why do either of you think you know the figures? not being picky, just curioius about you knowledgable guys and your sources

  10. Well my real names david dein and I had to talk somewhere…….excuse call from titi coming through

  11. Another very good article.
I’m now very excited because we are all waiting for Wenger to make his move and the guy has never failed to catch us all by surprise.
The papers say Anelka so he’s just as likely to sign Eto’o or Torres or even no-one.

  12. You’re right, Danish, but it’s still a facility that’s available – not that Wenger is likely to use it as he seems desperate to prove he can build a winning team on a fraction of the budget of our rivals.

Anelka? He’s a journeyman. He left to join his dream club – Real Madrid where he was useless and has since played for 5 other less dreamy clubs like Man City and Bolton. His goal-scoring ratio is not bad, but I think he’s rates his annual signing on fee as more important than developing as a player so I doubt Wenger would want him back.

I would prefer Huntelaar or Andy Johnson. Goals without the baggage.

  13. Lets see what wenger has to say about the situation today. If he comes out with ” i dont think we need to buy anyone” I will go down to the emirates and set fire to the armoury.

  14. The press, sky sports news & various professional pundits are indeed speculating upon their own speculation…believing their own propoganda.

TH14 basically left because he wanted to maximise his chances of winning the European Cup & obtaining further glory in the remaining years that he has left as a professional footballer. The stuff about Dein & Wenger are simply excuses and poor ones at that. But good luck to TH14.

Arsenal will move on and has a great future.

I believe that Arsene will stay at the club for a number of years to come. When he leaves the club, he will retire as a manager.

There’s no chance of him going to Barca or Madrid…
he simply won’t have the climate of boardroom stability & degree of control over all footballing matters that he has enjoyed for over 10 years at Arsenal, and, whatever else
Arsene may be, he’s not stupid.

  15. Great commonsense approach to the present froth and bubble as usual Yogi. It amazes me that some are so ready to accept information at face value without letting their brain filter it first. The Anelka story about the board refusing to sanction it just doesn’t square with the announcement by Edelman last week stating that it was Wengers decision whether Henry stays or goes and that Wenger has full control over all transfer and player decisions. If it is what Wenger wants and it is within the budgets agreed, Edelman said, then Wenger gets it. So if Wenger wants Anelka then Wenger gets him its as simple as that. However, its a much better headline to have Wenger and the board at odds so that is the story that gets published without any corroboration other than it might be believed by some.

  16. As I Gooner, I too am a little confused, and frankly fed up with all the financially driven smoke screens. How can an “honest” man such as TH say last season that he hopes to finish his career with a team he loves, and then Foxtrot Oscar 12 months later.

As concerns Wenger, he needs to speak out, but I am sure he will in time. He does not often get it wrong, but he is not a PR man. He needs another ally like DD to act as his front man, and send out some positive messages to all the Gooners out there, let alone the media.

We DO need some big signings to increase morale, as I cant believe TH leaving, and Arsenal being seen as a “feeder team” cannot affect morale.

Dare I say it, but this beautiful game is driven by the $, which makes the takeover issue even more interesting. Do we reject Kroenke or accept? If we reject, we stand still whilst those around us i.e. Chelski, Manure move on, but we become about as English as a Big Mac….interesting.

Time will tell, but my blood pressure does not like the waiting.

  17. Joe,

The 40 mil facility is not a transfer kitty. It is a credit arrangement. It simply tells other clubs dealing with Arsenal that the club can pay debts when they fall due.

  18. I believe TH, aware of his age and that one more season would make him subject AW’s policy of only giving 1 year contracts after the age of 30. If, he has gained a 4 year contract at Barca, then it would make sense. He should cut the crap and the smoke screens. Let’s hope ARSENE KNOWS!

  19. Emkay,

His contract would have expired when he was 32. He might have decided to retire by then anyway.

  20. AW works to an overall budget wages and transfer kitty. So on top of the £16m he also has £5m in wages to lay with. Freddie is on £70,000 a week hence AW attempts to off load him.

The sad think with TH14’s exit is the premiership as a whole has lost a star. Barcelona will hype TH14 but they have to they’ve paid more for him than they did Ronaldinho (who was 23 at the time) and they have to make up for their “dissappointing” season. But La Liga now benefits overall, they will probably overlook the Puyol World Cup incident.

  21. Reasons I don’t trust the Board.

    1. Four years ago Peter Hill-wood wrote to me explaining that the increase in season ticket prices was so Arsenal could hold to its world class players. Since then Lauren, Van Bronkhorst, Cole, Campbell, Edu, Vieira, Pires, Wiltord, Bergkamp, Reyes (?) and Henry have gone.

    2. We’ve been assured, time and time again that Asburton Grove will not effect our on-the-pitch activites. Le Boss has ring-fenced transfer funds at his disposal. Yet we can’t seem to sign any one of note.

On further thought. We seem to be allowing a soon-to-be tax-exile like Danny Fiszman to run the club to suit himself? If, as has been widely suggested, Danny F sells his shares in a year’s time to avoid Capital Gains Tax and then disappears off the scene, won’t those currently backing the Board look very stupid.

  22. No because those pro take over don’t know the terms it will be undertaken. How would you feel if like those season ticket holders you received a letter with your season ticket renewal saying the price is going up 12% and on top of that you will now be automatically be charged for all home cup games whether you want a ticket or not adding a potential £500 to the price.

All the above players left because they had passed their peak. Arsene Wenger does not operate a Galactico policy, if you want to follow a team that does apply to the Kings Road.

  23. Bitter N Twisted you twit ~ ! who was right who was wrong >?
they wont sell henry.. arsene wont sign a new contract.
shows you how little you know about a club your supposed to support
MAYBE ITS YOU WHO HASNT BEEN A FAN FOR LONG !
come at me again like that and youll get some, yogi blamed me for swearing at you .. in my opinion you need more than that ! you f###### c### !

    les
i think youll find reyes’s real estate has gone up a bit since he scored 2 goals in reals final match . to be sure hes a better player than hleb, who we paid 10 mil for !

3 year contract…. hmmm . some people said it wont happen ..
cant help but say i told you so ..

henry left because of arsenes lack of commitment .
id say thats it in a nut shell. i mean if i was henry id ask myself why would i stick around if arsene cant give anyone a straight answer about his future! .. arsene IS THE ONE WHO CREATED THIS NEW TEAM, to show no commitment to the future when this team is a FUTURE TEAM STILL NEEDING ALOT OF WORK just shows no backbone or commitment !.
(and if your saying he’s holding on to the last minute to sign to get a better deal, then he isnt puttng his newly crafted team first !!! how inspirational is that ? ) no wonder people want to leave .
WHY would henry want to stick around ? and im sure when henrys talking about DD ,hes talking about the relationship with DD and arsenes NOT his own …And how it would sway arsene to leave at the end of his contract.
(HENCE LEAVING US WITH A HUGE UNCERTAIN FUTURE
WITH PLAYERS LEAVING LEFT,RIGHT & CENTRE!)
and henry is not gaurenteed winning the champions league with barca .barca didnt even win la liga ( but it sure will be a great team now henrys there ). Thats not why he left to win CL. He left because over the last 2 years STATURE WISE our club has been going down the toilet .All those who dont believe that are simply BLIND !.

Arsene needed to pull out some BIG signings from the bag .
(pretty hard when hes only just commisioned grimandi).
he needed to commit his future then im sure
henry wouldnt have left .. FULL STOP .

and all you people saying henry held the youth back is just utter rubbish ! he was inspirational !your just making excuses because we lost the best striker in the world !

if you play with crap players and you have a very talented player leading the way other players around you NATURALLY RISE TO THE OCCASSION AND LEARN quicker, occasionally youll have the odd confrontational stare , but having henry in the team
is a far better senario than playing against him, or not being there to learn from him !
He just needed experienced players of a similar level to him toget the best out of him! and lets face it EXPERIENCED PLAYERS were dissapearing fast around him ! and replaced with arsenes MASTER PLAN TO THE FUTURE . a future that even now he is clouded in ! and wont commit too ! i saw it comming 10 miles away ..

arsene needed to commit ! TOLD YOU SO ..AGAIN !

3 years isnt much to ask for .. it would put him to 60 and still give him 5 years for his spain glory trip . By that stage we would see if the arse still has it ! and FAILURE OR SUCCESS our juniors will be seniors by then !!

and anekla is so predictable .. sure as eggs DD has gone .
i think we wont see too many more super signings from the master now .. infact other than fabs and walcott there hasnt been !

  24. That’s a good point Vivb. Why aren’t we given the option of buying our home cup tickets – like the Carling Cup tickets – as a separate option? That would reduce the cost a bit – but we’d still be the most expensive tickets in the Premiership. Who said anything about a Galactico policy? We had a team that had been carefully built up over a number of years, a team that won the league without being beaten, a team that was broken up in just three years. Why? Was it to help fund Ashburton Grove? Because if it was I don’t remember anything else coming from the Board about it, except they wanted to increase season tickets to hold on to the world class players.

  25. No you have a club that has frozen prices and from next season gives season ticketholders the opportunity to sell their seats if they can’t use it.

Of the list of players you’ve mentioned how many were sold in their prime! Vieira has “won” to Italian titles but the slower pace suites him. Edu went because he wasn’t guaranteed a place in the 1st XI he then did his ligaments. The others were either prone to injury (and read the Barca doctors statement re Henry’s groin), in their 30’s or at the end of their careers (Bergkamp).

Wenger isn’t a big name manager, if the club move to that stage another manager will be needed. Last close season Cheski spent £30m on a striker and big wages on a playmaker, Man Utd spent £18m on an over priced Carrick and lost their leading striker but which team won the premiership.

Do you think RvP would ever reached his potential alongside Henry? Do you think Henry would have accepted being dropped for games because he doesn’t suit the loan striker role and his injuries mean he is not as mobile as he was 3-4 years ago.

  26. I totally agree with you ethan_gooner some more loyalty from Mr wenger would have swayed Henry to stay for the duration of his contract.

But my main worry isn’t the fact that he left it is that he left for £6m more than we payed for headless chicken can’t shoot to save my lefe hleb.

How can quite possibly the best striker in the world who still had 3 years to run on his contract be sold for £16m???? That is a travesty.

Henry never looked the same after Bergy hung up his boots, and he has been quoted many times saying that Dennis Bergkamp was his fav strike partner.

I pray we get Ryan Babel as he is as close to Henry as there is available on the current market, sell Hleb and maybe get royston drenthe to play left mid.

  27. I have no particular allegiance to Fiszman but this tax exile story is a red herring. He only controls 24.1% of the shareholding – less than Dein and Kroenke combined. It is irrelevant whether Fiszman sells his shares now, next year or never. Another 50% of shares are held by other than Fiszman, Kroenke and Dein. All Kroenke has to do is persuade less than half of this 50% to take control. Fiszman is the wrong target as Dein and Kroenke together can outvote him providing they can persuade enough of the other shareholders to back them, So far they have been unable to do this so we can assume their vision of the future isn’t supported by more shareholders than just simply Fiszman.

  28. vivb you asked

Do you think RvP would ever reached his potential alongside Henry?

Why wouldnt he ? and infact id say he did ! he was looking friggin great until the ’show boat’ broke his foot in celebrations ..

I know what your leading to . like the rest of the puppets who think henry stunted the youth! thats total bollocks !

Henry inspired everyone around him to preform ! and everyone was better off for him being at the club . even theo wanted to train with him , as well as 90% of the youth..who wanted to join arsenal football club because HE IS THE BEST STRIKER IN THE WORLD !
barca wouldnt be interested in him if he wasnt !
we have been a selling club for the past 2/3 years
hardly giving the youth we purchased a sniff . bentley- pennant -stokes -jeremie – muamba-larrson-lupoli .as well as patrick- pires -wiltord-edu-cole-sol-lauren ..and now our only WORLD CLASS PLAYER henry .. its a sad sad day indeed. the manager wont even commit his future willingly !

and why wouldnt anyone reach there potential along side henry . its not like everyone has a collar on .. the only person who should be upset by last season was flamini !
in the end we even gave baptista a chance to shine ..
everyone barr flamini had PLENTY OF CHANCE TO SHINE
henry played only 17 games out of 38 mate !
what are you on about ? problem was NO-ONE STEPPED UP ! thats why he left !

  29. i just had an interesting thought !
wasnt ac milan or inter and even liverpoo interested in signing henry? unless it was pre arranged why did we sell him so quick?
im sure other clubs could have bidded on him then ?!
it would of probly raised more than 16 mil ?
    NOT SMART BUSINESS BY ARSENE!?

why was barca the only club to bid on him and why didnt
we publicly announce it so we could get a larger fee ?

any thoughts on this time line ? because i think my inital
statement weeks ago .. (which everyone else also shot down in flames ) was he must of not been injured .. maybe arsene
knew he wasnt going to put on another number 14 jersey

i know it would of probly been henrys preference , but at the end of the day we owned his arse-….nal contract

    didnt we ?

  30. ethan-
RVP broke his leg WHILE scoring the goal. Take your head out of your arse. Stop whingeing

  31. Arsene Wenger will only sign a new contract if David Dein is brought back to the club, so it’s getting reported in the Daily Mail.
Wenger is expected to meet with club directors this week where it appears he will lay down the gauntlet. Wenger’s deal is only good for the coming season and his refusal thus far to extend is set to exert huge pressure on the board to undo the situation.

told ya without DD arsene was nothing !

  32. Its in the Daily Mail. Must be true!!!!

  33. How did they read his mind before the meeting has taken place? Wow, that daily mail is goooood!!!

  34. Amos

DF’s position is not a red herring. With 24.1% of the shareholding, he has only to persuade 1% more of the shareholding to vote against a takeover to leave it in limbo.

    Ethan / twotouchmiracle

If it’s in The Daily Mail, it must be true…

  35. Deleted. If you want to post it again, think about what you are writing. YW

  36. yes well with your past record on what you believe true yogi .
arsene isnt going to RE-SIGN until december , but your saying HE WILL AND WONT LEAVE nothing to worry about i thnk you said ?, . (cause he holds off due to a better negoitation of wages or some such ) also HENRY wouldnt leave either …

this statement confirms he wont stick around.. geez i dont have to keep telling you my thoughts on arsene .. you know it to death … this is just another nail in the speculation BECOMMING REALITY coffin… just admit im right , i know i am .you know i am .. it makes sence the board will require his commitment .. AND MORE IMPORTANTLY I KNOW HE WONT GIVE IT !

  37. Ethan-

So if Wenger does sign a new contract and you are wrong should we expect you to stop making predictions? Will we be allowed to throw it in your face and claim that from henceforth you are wrong about everything else? The manager and player are two different people and have different values when it comes to negotiating contracts.

Why wouldn’t most real fans predict that Henry would stay?

    pipe down young lad

  38. What an angry little fellow you are ethan.

I don’t know if you mommy doesn’t love you, or a man in the park had a present for you in his pants, or what, but you’re bringing down the comment section in this site.

No one reads your posts really, we just skip to the next ones because you’re boring and have absolutely nothing constructive to say.

  39. Anyone know what time Arsene’s press conference might be?

  40. Amos the Danny Fiszman tax-exile story is anything but a red-herring. If he moves to Switzerland this year and then sells his shares a year later to Kroenke and thus avoids CGT, he will effectively be using the Club to line his own pockets.

I suppose you think that’s OK?

  41. well bron , if youve written anything in the past ive skipped over it too !

its a shame you do skip them .. as you might actually learn something

  42. twotouchmiracle

read it and weep you sad little man !

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/a/arsenal/6285363.stm

  43. Eddy

Never said it was OK, merely pointed out it is not a red herring. I have no problem with DF making money as long the Club does not suffer. And until someone makes a bid and you can see what they are offering, you cannot pass judgement as there is no basis for that judgement.

    YW

  44. YW – sorry I was responding to Amos!

  45. I’ll be honest, I think sometimes you may have decent points ethan, but typically they’re buried in so much bitter angry crap that I won’t take the time to read them. I guess I just can’t tolerate irrationally negative people, and so choose to ignore their ranting.

For me personally, I’d like to discuss the ways in which the club can move on, positively into the future. I’m not talking about wearing rose tinted glasses, just that we as supporters need to try to determine how to turn this bad situation into something more hopeful for the future.

We all have something in common, we support Arsenal FC, and with or without Henry we will still support the club.

You know, the difficult times tell the most about people—and I for one would rather discuss how the club can move forward in adversity, than bitch and moan about the end of the fucking world.

  46. One thing I am pissed off about, the paltry 16 million we got for Henry—Barca just put a 84.2 million pound release clause on him. Jesus.

    http://msn.foxsports.com/soccer/story/6959652

  47. The largest block of ownership are the Bracewell-Smith family (Lady Nina and the Carrs) they have owned the shares sine the 1920’s. They have no heirs so their stake will eventually be sold but they are also long term guardians of the club. ombined with Fiszman they control 50%. If Dein hadn’t fucked Fiszman over repaying a loan the board wouldn’t be as disfunctional as it was. (Dein and Edelman loath each other)

Maybe AW is trying one last time to get everyone to step back and realise it’s in everyones interest to work together and that includes DD as he owns 15%. As for Dein’s judgement look at Freddie sitting on a £70,000 a week contract and his indulgance with Henry and his track record at the FA (who gave Eriksson that wopping contract). But look at the clubs wage bill if you think the board have failed to invest in the team and players.

  48. Perhaps I am being dim but I really don’t see how DF acquiring another 1% of shares can stop a takeover. If Kroenke can acquire 51% of the total shareholding he has control of the company. The fact that DF has 24, 25 or 49% still means he can be outvoted on any key issue. With 25% plus he can block changes to the companies consitution but this is only the commercial equivalent of athletes foot. If Kroenke can acquire another 25% of the 50% not on DFs hands plus Deins shares then the club is his.

As for the taxation thing the only loser in Fizsman selling his shares in a years time is the taxman. It costs Arsenal nothing. But in any case of what interest to any of the other shareholders is DFs tax affairs? Why would it prevent Nina Bracewell-Smith selling her 16% to Kroenke? DF wouldn’t even compromise his tax affairs if he were to agree now to sell his shares to Kroenke in a years time and let Kroenke get on with whatever he wants to do. As I say I must be pretty dumb I suppose but I really don’t get this at all.

  49. ethan
    http://www.arsenal.com/article.asp?thisNav=News&article=464994
read the first paragraph…and weeep…you are obivously a wind up artist

  50. I have to say that I have not read so much horseshit in a long time. The club is in a superb position and AW is in total control.

TH left becuase he was asked to go.

It is highly likely that Gilles Grimandi will be announced as AWs right hand man in the next few days and AW will announce an extension to his own contract. GG will become Arsene’s successor.

When Danny Fiszman has lived in Switzerland for a few more months he will sell his shares. DD will return as Chairman and Stan Kroenke will buy the club, but largely with his own money.

The squad ( a year older) is looking superb. Gilberto will be captain followed by Cesc. When Cesc leaves for Barcelona in three or four years time, Diaby and Denilson will be recognised as world class footballers. Fran Merida will have come of age

RvP will be one of the best strikers in the world as will Theo Walcott. When RvP steps down he will already have been surpassed by Bendtner and Vela, but his commitment to the club will be exemplary..

In the meantime the defence will have become one of the tightest the EPL has ever known lead by Djourou Senderos and Clichy/ Kolo will have become a club legend and Gallas will have moved to an Italian club.

Tomas Rosicky will become known as the man who was able to fill RPs boots.

Players such as Babele, Anelka and others may also be in the mix but that is a difficult one to call as is the future of Adebayor.

Would’nt swap it for the world…roll on next season.

  51. ethan? nothing to say?

  52. Ethan.

You are horrible, I am ashamed to be associated with the same team as you.

    Regards.

  53. Amos,
25% does not stop a takeover but it prevents the new owner from doing certain things. It makes life very awkward and would certainly put anyone off of buying the club unless they can get hold of DF’s shareholding.

As for the tax aspect, DF is looking at paying roughly 30% (after indexation and allowances) of his proceeds to the taxman or paying absolutely nothing to any taxman at all if he sells in ten months. Now if the share price were to rise to compensate him, then who knows he may decide to go. The business aspect of any sale will come into it and I guess it comes down to whether or not DF agrees with a leveraged buy-out or not. If he does, my guess is that the Board will sell and so will Dein; if Kroenke buys Arsenal, he will do it himself. Whether he brings DD back is another matter. My guess is he would but it might be for a short time only. I have no problem with DD coming back but under the current Board it is unlikely to happen. But whether the power being offered by SK would be enough to tempt him, time will tell..

  54. Frank,

Nicw post, and don’t forget, we have Matthew Connolly, Traore, Jay Simpson knocking on the first team door, and in a few years time Rui Fonte, Carlos Vela (worshipped already in Mexico), Henri Lansbury, and Rhys Murphy who all look like decent prospects.

Echoing some of the other posts, I am oddly excited to see how things come together next season.

This is the time for other players to step up, to forge their own cult status at the club.

Who are the big stars for next season do you think?

  55. I hear what you are saying Yogi but I still think this is something of a sideshow. The 25% shareholding mark wouldn’t be enough to put off Kroenke if he could acquire 50% or more of the shares then the rest would come in time. Sure you could make life faintly irritating as a 25% shareholder but it is a pretty negative position and not something any moderately intelligent businessman would want to countenance as nuisance value for any length of time.

As for the tax angle, J P Morgan, who are handling the share purchases for Kroenke, like most major merchant banks are past masters at structuring the deals to maximise the tax benefits. It is what they do best – food and drink to them. Even with my limited knowledge I would guess that Fiszman could sell Kroenke an option now to buy the shares in ten months time at an agreed price and mitigate any tax liability. As I say I think the Fiszman tax issue is a red herring.

  56. Ethan….tut tut…

  57. Frank

Very good, more of the same please.

  58. [...] Henry, Arsene And Anelka Reading the Sunday’s was an interesting exercise in how far a point can be stretched. Rather like The Master in […] [...]

  59. It doesn’t really matter what Henry’s reasons are for leaving, he’s gone now and thats that. I can’t really blame him, he’s getting up there in age and wants to win the Champions League. Lets face it, we’re not winning Europe anytime soon and asking one superstar to carry a team is too much pressure. I guess he just had had enough of management not signing players and waiting for them to come out of the system. I think we all appreciate what Henry’s done for this club, let him walk. Long Live The King.

  60. I can’t believe Henry left Arsenal. He said he wouldn’t. What’s this world coming to?

  61. One of the problems is that the current board say very little. they just leak bits to their stooges in the press. Supporters should be told why TH went for just 16 million, and what funds are available not just the bla bla that there is whatever money that AW wants. Kroneke and DD will eventually take control with DD as chairman, and if so AW will stay. If Reyes and Freddie leave it will be 13 million less in wages. We should wait to hear from DD and Kroenke before slagging them off, if Kroneke keeps the promises he has alegedly made to buy the club without inreasing massive debt then its a good thing. I think if Carlos Vela can be fastracked into UK now he can make a positive impact next season his year in La Liga B has helped him gain experience. We do need a winger and A DEFENSIVE COACH.

  62. all the talk about the 25% threshold is interesting but omits an important point: DF sold 659 shares via JPMorgan to Kroenke..why did this happen if as is claimed on this site, JPM acted as Kroenke’s broker, ie he must have known who the buyer was?
this sale effectively brought DF’s holding under 25%..correct me if I am wrong
this seems to be contradictory with DF’s plans at this moment..

Vivb .. that loan over which DD and DF fell out, can you elaborate please? does it have anything to do with the financing of DD’s shares purchases or am I wrong?

Frank .. all is not rosy and not every young player becomes a super star . in fact, the transformation of young hopefuls into the kind of players we have seen the last 10 years at the club is not a logical prgression ..
this does not mean that I align myself with the doomsayers but it appears that a face saving purchase might be needed this season to support our reputation

i also believe that AW is unhappy with DD leaving .. he DID say so himself and GG taking over is a time buying exercise as he can be rebranded to a lower level if DD joined after Kroenke buys AFC

to me it is still unavoidable that Kroenke will end up buying the club .. the time wasting is not a good thing for AFC as it destabilizes the club, but maybe it will help put a framework in place for a safe takeover that does not endanger the structure of AFC in the long term

btw solgooner i dont know of any club that will publish its transfer dealings/budgets so that every other club is aware of it .. lets not be naive .. also think of it in the following way, imagine for 1 sec as it is plausible that AFC got f**k all dosh available, would you appreciate it to be common knowledge?
doesnt look like a great tactical play to me

  63. BB, I’m not sure that Wenger ever used the word ‘unhappy’ to describe his feelings about the departure of DD. He was certainly shocked and sorry to see him go, which you would expect as they had both a personal and professional relationship. TH has made no bones about his own ‘unhappiness’ but that is a different matter.

Maybe the Dein/Fiszman fall out was about the sale of the 659 shares because I’ve seen claims that
    a) he was duped into selling to Kroenke (maybe by Dein) or
    b) that he used the sale to smoke out Kroenke and Dein.

Who knows what to believe. Without inside knowledge we can only speculate.

Solgooner – the club have said that TH was sold for an ‘undisclosed fee’ so they have not confirmed the figure. Barcelona obviously want to look like they’ve got themselves a bargain, but since there is a problem with TH’s groin and the sciatic problem, they may have just bought themselves a lame duck.

  64. BB – on the contrary I think you are a doomsayer. This squad is no longer very ‘young’ and is perhaps the strongest in the EPL…maybe with an addition to cover the TH gap. I agree with AW the first team needs a slight change of balance perhaps but the quality is there.

And there is no evidence that AW is going anywhere, in fact his recent acquisitions indicate quite the opposite.

The club is one the most stable in Europe and the fact that Kroenke may be in the advance stages of purchasing the club does not destabilise the club…unless you are a doomsayer.

All the speculation about who likes who and who walked off with someone elses shares etc, or sneaked on other Board members is just playground stuff and reflects more on those discussing it than reality.

I do agree with you though that anyone who believes that any serious business would discuss its dealings in public is stupid and naive.

  65. I would like to see Eboue play right mid next season with Hoyte on the overlap as i beliee these two made the most penetrative runs on the right last season.

I think it is time for us to see the inroduction of Fran Merida on our left flank as a sub becuase he has so much talent possibly moe than cesc.

Time to get rid of headless chicken Hleb £10m for a very good dribbler with no end product.

I would love a big name signing but that really isn’t AW style, it wouldn’t surprise me if we got that Lyn Oslo striker Chinedu Ogbuke, a relative unknown and transform him as he did with NA and TH14.

    I have faith AW
