Won’t You Stay Just A Little Bit Longer?

The News Of The World made a big play of having the futures of Arsene Wenger and Thierry Henry explained in today’s edition. Don’t waste your money buying it for it contained nothing that has not already been read about the latter and little from Le Boss of note, other than that which we knew already,

I have a contract for one more year here and I will complete that contract.I have never broken a contract in my entire career and I will not break a contract now. So I can tell you categorically that I will be at the club next season. And next summer I will sit down with the board and see

Which is hardly startling, for it is a mantra that he has trotted out every time his contract enters its final phase. And there is not one reason to believe that this season will be any different, so AW will be here for one more year (at least) unless the Board decide otherwise so that ought to end the vague speculation about him being on a plane to Madrid or Barcelona, none of which was seriously believed anyway. However, it does stop short of what was required to stop speculation about his two prized assets. My guess is that they will follow his lead in coming media comments, committing themselves to the Club for another year which to be honest is about the best you can expect from a player these days.

Those of us that remember the ‘one club’ player sometimes have trouble adjusting to the lack of perceived loyalty, we all want the best to stay put. Yet football is not much different from the workplace that you or I inhabit. If someone is unhappy with aspects of their job, there is little point in throwing more money at the individual because more often than not, the environment that created the dissatisfaction in the first place will resurface. In Arsenal’s case, failure to challenge for a trophy will again lead to media speculation again this season. It is in the best interests of the club if Arsene decides his future before the end of next season for several reasons; the players will be able to commit their futures, or not as the case may be, and more importantly, the Club can plan actively for Arsene’s replacement, somebody ought to be ready to be in place before the start of the close season to effectively plan the following campaign.

The key to his future is contained in the last notable comment he made,

There’s absolutely no need to panic. We finished fourth in the table — level on points with Liverpool — and we have a very young side which, I believe, can improve again this season

If there is tangible improvement, I have no doubt he will stay. If there is not then it is more difficult to be that certain. He has said in the past that he will step aside if he feels he can take the team no further. My suspicion is that he feels crunch time is approaching. If the team do not at least challenge for the title, it will be the first time in his spell at the club that they have not done so for more than two consecutive seasons. Much will depend on whether he feels that the team can move forward again from there. This season, The Emirates Factor will not hold water as the players ought to be used to the stadium. Nor, I feel, will there be much truck given for shambling defeats at places such as The Reebok or Craven Cottage. There will be an ‘upset’ along the way, these are generally unavoidable for all teams, but minimising these through more ‘intelligence’ away from home would assist in achieving a better ‘trophy’ hunt.

Jeremie Aliadiere is on his way then, the deal agreed ‘in principle’ between the two clubs and Middlesbrough with the player. A shame, I think, that he did not realise the potential that he displayed when he first came onto the scene but his long term injury set him back a season and a half, from which he never recovered in terms of his Arsenal career. Best of luck to the lad at his new club and probably worth a punt on him scoring in any matches against Arsenal next season.

Jens Lehmann commented yesterday on why he turned down a move back to the Bundesliga and signed a new contract at Arsenal,

I play in a team where the quality is very high…I would not have had the same quality, even if I could have chosen between all 18 teams (in the Bundesliga)

Get those claws retracted Herr Lehmann! He is probably right though for the majority of those teams yet the same could be said of this country also. He is positive about the signing of Fabianski, as well as the other ‘keepers in the National team,

No professional footballer should have a problem with some competition. If somebody is enough, they should earn their place

Absolutely. My own hope is that he will rediscover the concentration at setpieces and lose the ability to be easily distracted, concentrating instead on organising the marking.

Finally, Nicklas Bendtner has weighed in with his two’ penneth worth,

Arsenal have very high standards and expectations there. We will have to battle with other teams, which we haven’t done during the last few seasons. I’m sure in time we will be back up there competing with them

We do and I wonder if he realises the expectations that are placed upon him? Having seen Aliadiere and Baptista misfire last season, the support is desperate for the back-up strike force to hit the ground running when they are called upon, Bendtner being seen as The Great White Hope in that respect. Let’s hope that he isn’t a Dope instead.

’til tomorrow.

  1. Unless Dein and Kroenke come to some arrangement with the exisating board Wenger Henry and Cesc will leave at the end of next season,Dein and WENGER WERE A TEAM .
The old scoll board need to clarify what Kroenke wants to do, and somehow make peace

  2. Some of Arsenal fans need to realise that no matter
what Arsene or TH14 or Cesc says when speaking to the
media, the speculation about them and the club from the
    press will not cease.

That’s because they simply have no control over what is printed or broadcasted in the media.

So to state, as the article above does, that Arsene’s comments in the NOTW stop somewhat short
of confirming that TH14 & Cesc will be at Arsenal next season
    is naive at best.

As far as Arsene Wenger is concerned, the immediate future’s of both players is simply not an issue…both players are already under long term contracts, they haven’t requested a transfer, and are happy to be playing for Arsenal, so what is the problem?

The problem is the media, not the club, not the players, not the manager. Don’t believe the hype!

  3. Magneto,

I never said that it stopped short of confirming them being there, just that he didn’t say enough to stop the speculation.

    YW

  4. Solgooner: Kronke created this problem, i would feel uneasy with the notion that we have to go and kiss his arse to try and solve it.

  5. In fact, if Henry is to go, perhaps now is a good time. The team is in the process of being rebuilt and his departure would enable them to shift the focus away from him in attack, bringing in a new forward to alter the dynamic of the team.

That is not to say I want him to go, far from it as he seems to have a good three years left in him. However, the media speculation is unsettling for the squad as interviews get dominated by it – look at the one Djourou gave a day or so ago.

  6. Has the NOTW got anything that wasn’t said a month ago?

I would hope AW is still on holiday.

The club really needs to find someway of resolving all the issues in the next few weeks.

AW has embarked on a project that needs to be seen through to full fruition & further developed. He is not going to do that in the 1 year left on his contract.

I fully appreciate what DD did for the club but in the end it seems he was trying to sell it, at a point when they should have all been working together.

Now none of us know the ins & outs of this but if AW wants to achieve his objectives he has to break from what has happened in the past & put a least another year on his contract THIS summer.

The fear is that the two men who have produced this decade of exellence could put the club back for a similar period.

I cannot believe either man would want that.

    Let’s hope not.

  7. TH14 denied wanting to leave every day for two weeks afetr the season ended and then decided he had had enough of it, to be honest if he goes he goes, what can we do?

Can you imagine building a group of young players for the past 5 years and then letting someone else realize your dream and take the credit for it? somehow i think wenger will sign.

I love Nicks attitude, I think he could be a big star next year. I remember seeing him for the reserves when he scored a left foot volley, a right foot volley and then as he walked off alongside sol was suprised to see that he was slightly taller than him. The boy could have a BIG impact.

I would love to see us buy one SUPER SUPER player my preference would be renato, but we shall see who we buy. All this crap speculation in the papers is annoying every summer now, it seems they only kick us when we are down, or even we we are up! lol.

  8. solgooner: Kronke is at the root of the problems at the club. I resent the impression we have to go crawling to him to try and solve them.. He certainly seems disinclined to do anything to make things better. Too busy doing his thing in America to even meet with the board.

  9. Yogi,
Re: the expectations on Bendtner: I’d rather the lad be allowed to go about finding his feet without the burden of expectations on his back. I certainly would be delighted to see him take naturally to first team action in the premiership; but I’m not going to fixate on it. Let him just play.
    Flint,
“He is not going to do that in the 1 year left on his contract.”
    Very true.
I hope this fantastic young squad becomes the finished article, under Wenger, for Arsenal. It’d be a pity if that didn’t happen.
The past two years have been quite a roller coaster: Losing a good number of experienced hands all at once, moving to a new stadium, and now the Dein-Kroenke affair.
I hope we’ll be able to put all that behind, and begin the new season with only the footballing aspects to worry about.
    We’ll see.

  10. YW thanks for managing to write something balanced and sensible even in these lean times. I agree with you that next season is crunch time given the comments AW made towards the end of last season. If this team do not show signs of competing or winning something he may not sign another contract because he will feel that he has taken them as far as he can and will step aside. He is an honourable man and will not sign another contract now if he’s not sure he’s the right man for the next stage of the team’s development. TH14 and Cesc may be talking about leaving if Wenger does, but maybe they should concentrate on showing us what they’ve got on the pitch so that AW will not feel he needs to go prematurely.

  11. u know i cant wait to see nicklas bendtner in action for us next season. looking forward seeing that

  12. Wenger has one year left on his contract and won’t break it. Cesc has seven years left on his and Henry 3 years. Wenger will let them break theirs only if it suits him to do so. Henry going this summer remains unlikely though not impossible. Next summer it is quite probable even if Wenger stays though a good season transforms the whole atmosphere.

  13. Flint McCullough said:

I would hope AW is still on holiday.

AW is in Norway, and he is not here looking at the fjords. He is here to watch a Norwegian central defender.

  14. Is he big & ugly ?

  15. We vikings are all tall, blonde and handsome. But this kid is the exception; he IS big and ugly ( here’s a link if you really want to see http://fotball.aftenbladet.no/forstediv/article83096.ece ).

He turned down ManU last year, Steve Rowley has been tracking him for a while, and now AW was here today to watch him play. He’s 16 by the way, so I really think he is gonna solve all our problems..
