In The Maloud-a And Fickle Public Speaking

It seems that the impatient are to get their wish with some transfer activity being reported. The Independent says that Florent Malouda will cost in the region of £10m, hijacking his expected move to Liverpool. The paper seem to believe talks will be under way tomorrow but whether that is with Lyon or the player, it is unclear. In terms of the player, he fits the bill of what was seemingly required, left-winger, international and CL experience and not too expensive. His record last season was ten goals in twenty seven League starts which is something that was missing from midfield.

If he does sign, I would be surprised if there is any more transfer activity other than outgoings (or the ‘unexpected’ departure requiring a replacement to be signed). Goalkeeping is settled with Lehmann facing a challenge from Almunia and Fabianski. Defence seems to be covered with Hoyte and Eboue at RB, Toure, Gallas, Djourou and Senderos at CB, Clichy and Traore at LB. Central Midfield then weighs in with Fabregas, Denilson, Diaby, Gilberto; RM has Hleb, Walcott, Ljungberg; LM Rosicky, Malouda. Finally up front, Henry, RvP, Adebayor and Bendtner. That is twenty four players which ought to be sufficient to cover the normal injuries and suspensions, rather than the freak long-term injuries suffered over the past two seasons. The question is then whether Arsene is ’scarred’ by the defensive and attacking injuries in that time and looks to bring in maybe another forward and defender to cover. I don’t see the need for the latter unless someone leaves whilst the forward will need to be a big name to oust RvP and Henry. The biggest problem though is unsettling the current squad. There needs to be competition for places but that should be two players directly competing for a place with perhaps a third who is versatile enough to cover the position in the short-term.

On that subject, there is enough versatility to suggest the squad should remain as it is. Toure and Djourou can play RB, Hoyte and Gilberto CB, Hoyte and Gallas at LB. Midfield is fluent and interchangable anyway with positions meaning little to anyone other than Gilberto. Attack can be supplemented by Rosicky as an advanced midfielder so unless there is a burning desire on Arsene’s part to bring in new blood, I cannot see anything other than 1 signing coming on board, that being Malouda. Even if Ljungberg left, I don’t think Arsene would buy to replace him given his thoiughts that Walcott needs to learn his Premiership trade from the wide position.

Meanwhile AW is getting some thoroughly undeserved flack for being bigger than the Club. How this has been arrived at is as a response to Cesc’s comments about leaving if Arsene does. So, AW gets the flack for something he didn’t have any say in, something he didn’t do, something he has no input on. Hmmmm, I’m having a tough one following that one but bear with me it will all become clear in a minute, I’m sure….Nope, still don’t get it. Just because a player is loyal to the boss is not indicative of AW being bigger than the club. Just because AW has not signed a new contract does not mean an implosion at the end of the 2007/08 season. Do we know if one has been offered? Do we know that the terms are acceptable if one has? No and No. So why panic? Remember, all of this side were brought in by AW so they owe him their Arsenal careers but how often do players back an outgoing manager, saying they will be off, when the reality is that very few of these threats actually get carried through.

Another signing (or absence of it) has caused consternation, namely the Director of Football. Let’s not get to uppity about this not going through yet. At this moment in time, any new appointment is likely to be a bit of a lame duck in that they will be joining at a time of heavy activity, unable to contribute much because negotiations will be underway, the introduction of someone new likely to upset that process rather than enhance. Ken Friar, Edelman and AW are covering it off at the moment, Friar is an interim appointment until 1st July so why rush? My guess is that once the transfer activity for the Summer is done and dusted, then a new appointee will be made.

One thing that has struck me is that Dein seems to be going through a beatification process, surely a sainthood arriving in the near future. Let’s make no bones about this, he did have extensive experience, he did do good for the club but it takes two to tango. DD was against The Emirates, which if he had his way would have meant schlepping up to Wembley every home game and his final falling out with the Board seems to have been a long term issue not a sudden rush of blood. Yet nobody is accusing him of being bigger than the Club? I don’t ‘get’ the double standards being applied when talking of him and AW? DD was not Arsenal. He may have been more experienced than the current Board but in every walk of life, there comes a time to move on. That time for him has come. He’s gone. He may come back at some point in the future but until then, he is nothing to do with the Club other than a shareholder.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Great post.

But cant agree with you about Dein.

He was a man of genuine class, who could talk about football or about administration with equal expertice.

Sure, moving the stadium further away would be irritating in the short term. But 20 years down the road, having a bigger stadium would have been much more effective for Arsenal.

And its not like we have never moved bases in our history, is it?

  2. [...] A Cultured Left Foot reckons that if Malouda does sign he will compete with [...]

  3. You forgot about the Cup of Nations next season, so we will be short players. Eboue, Toure, Adebayor, dont know if i missed anyone but you know where im getting at. Considering last 2 seasons we were injury struck, Doesnt mean it will be all better this season. Majority of our First team players were out last season: Henry, Gallas, RVP, Rosicky,…Walcott (could have helped). As you can see we also offloaded lauren who was class experience. So what im saying is that we need to rotate players.

  4. mmm, just how do you manage to wear rose tinted glasses and blinkers at the same time.

the squad is big enough? is size everything then? it may be big enough it just isnt good enough. senderos, hleb, eboue adebayor walcott denilson have all been found severely wanting. other than our main 2, we dont have a striker who can hit a barn door. gallas is aging and slowing, henry will be 30, so ditto, lundjberg, ditto.
2008 is bad enough, 2009 when those latter ones do go is serious. and tehn more youngsters to draft in to supplement youngsters who now are not displaying sufficient talent or mettle

  5. Malouda does not fit the bill at all, slow, small and brain dead, he’s a dreadfully average player which is why he’s trying to link himself with any club going, rather than the other way around. If we sign him it would be a hopeless decision, he’s no better than a poor man’s Wiltord. Why do the fans long for the sound of the cash register, rather than actually taking an interest in the footballers in question? We won’t sign him, full stop.

  6. Well , no doubt we need a wide man – and Malouda would bill the bill nicely – but for me central defence has been a little bit of a concern – not in terms of back-up but rather in terms of consistency……if Senderos does leave as is rumoured and Djourou goes on loan (which wont make sense)…we will need a defender with authority…… if Saviola is available on a free then we should grab him….and let Ljungberg go….Samir Nasri though would be a dream! Malouda on the left and Samir Nasri/Saviola on the right would give us width, goals and creativity on both flanks….the legendary Cole/Pires partnership was gr8 but we can make such a partnership on BOTH flanks – Clichy/Malouda and Eboue/Nasri :) with Fabregas in the middle and Henry upfront with Van Persie…DREAMS ARE MADE OF THIS!

  7. Top notch post Yogi. Pretty well spot on on every key point in my book. Nonetheless, it seems some people are determined to believe that the world is coming to an end no matter how objective you try to be.

Don’t expect the Malouda deal, if it is going to happen, to be concluded before Reyes future is clarified though. We may still be a couple of weeks away before we conclude our transfer dealing for the summer.

  8. Great post as usual YW. As for transfers I’ll believe it when I see the announcement on Arsenal.com until then it’s just talk.

  9. A great post! I am confused by certain peoples criticism of Adebayor and Denilson. Both are very young and both are excellent so lay off them. Likewise Walcott has shown enough at his age to suggest that he has a very bright future and these players should be supported by us through thick and thin not turned on when their inevitable lapses in form do happen.

In terms of transfers I agree with you that we will not make many signings. I also agree that the squad does not need much bolstering yes we all know we need width but apart from that we will be better next season and the young players will be more ready for what the Prem has to offer.

Senderos has to stay in my opinion, I rate him very highly, ok so he has made some mistakes but then so did Tony Adams in his early career, he did not get the nickname Donkey for nothing. Senderos is the best CB we have in the air and as such we need him.

Basically I think I am saying to all GET OFF OUR PLAYERS BACKS the term ’supporter’ look it up in the dictionary.

  10. Excellent post Yogi.
Apropos of Dein, the reactions say it all: vilification or deification with nothing inbetween; that to me is indicative of a man who, for better or worse, had an impact. I personally still hope a reconciliation can be achieved on the back of a mutually acceptable compromise; why jeopardise a good show? Differences are inherent in any venture involving a group of men; I hope things are sorted out sensibly.
As for the Wembley idea, I’m genuinely surprised it was greeted with such hostility. I think it was a sensible idea. Given the mess the FA was in with the project, we could have negotiated a great deal for ourselves, and found ourselves in a position to spend more on – does this ring a bell?- transfers.
There was a lot of derisive commenting with the words “heritage”, “legacy”, and “own home” doing the rounds.
What heritage? A great stadium with a team hamstrung by constrained transfer budgeting?
What legacy? 4th place finishes because other clubs outbid us for class players?
What own home? A magnificient stadium that’ll never see an unbeaten run as Highbury did?
Not for a moment do I think money will solve all problems; but there’s no gainsaying the fact that even with Arsene’s bargain buying ability, a reasonable purse is necessary to compete.
There’s no denying we’d have been in a much better position to give Arsene cash had we opted for Wembley.
    Anyway.

  11. Karthic, are you honestly suggesting that moving to Wembley was a viable option? Remember when we first moved into the Grove, how devoid of anything Arsenal it was? Apart from the red seats and the giant badges outside the ground the stark concrete walls had no Arsenal insignia on them at all. This has now, for the most part, been addressed making the place feel more like home. This is something that could never have been achieved at Wembley and ultimately we would never have had our own home! We played our Champions league games at Wembley and that was a complete and total failure. I for one am glad that the club went ahead with the building of our fantastic new ground and we should be proud of the board that run our club. They have yet to steer us wrong!

  12. Seeing as Dein was sacked with ‘irreconcilable’ differences cited then presumably reconciliation isn’t possible otherwise the differences wouldn’t be ‘irreconcilable’. Remember that Dein was apparently ’sacked’. Thats quite an event to sack a director and with employment laws as they are you would need to be pretty sure of your ground in order to do so. In this case Dein must have been in clear breach of his fiduciary duties as a director in order to justify the sack.

The Wembley option might seem attractive on a short term basis but in the same way that buying a house and taking a mortgage is a better long term investment than renting, in the end renting Wembley would have cost us more and reduced our ability to compete over the longer term.

  13. It is not the abilities of the players that are in question; the consistency of their play this year and consistency of availablity was. Manchester United won the League with a settled side, the spine of which was available for a lot of the season. Chelsea’s ‘blip’ came when their first choice keeper and CB were out.

As for blaming youngsters, pardon me for disagreeing. The defence when Gallas was back did not look rock solid – our heaviest defeat came with our ‘preferred’ CB’s in tandem. How that is youngsters at fault is beyond me.

What I also don’t understand is how anyone can judge Walcott. Aside from the fact it is his first season and he was an ‘impact’ player for most of that, he carried an injury for part of it? WTF happened to giving people a chance to prove themselves? In years gone by, we used to be tolerant and give people a chance. What would have been made of Adams when he first got into the side is beyond me. For Senderos, read Adams.

We have this marvellous tendency to forget that the only youngster in the last twenty years to come in and be totally consistent from day one is Fabregas. Even he has had off games. Rocastle, Thomas and their ilk have come in and done well over time but were not totally consistent, finished articles from day one. FFS let’s have a bit of patience whilst AW rebuilds the team.

  14. 2 or 3 years seems to be a lifetime for some fans. Rebuilding the team after losing the likes of Wiltord, Vieira, Edu, Bergkamp and Pires in a relatively short space of time will take a bit longer than that. Add to that the stadium move and you can place it at anywhere from 4 to 5 years before getting it right. Now we came close in the CL so maybe it was a bit of a false dawn. We are not that far off being competitive for the league again. Numbers wise we seem to be ok. Ability wise we have a talented squad. What we lack is consistency and experience and these 2 go hand in hand. These are the things that take time but will bear fruit when you have a young squad that wont need major changes for years. Dont get me wrong i hurt when we dont win things. It is painful when sometimes you look at the team and see potential unfulfilled. But then you remember those games against Man U Chelski and the pool and you realise that we do in fact have a team that will win things. It will take time of course and is frustrating to have to wait. We have had 2 years now with this young squad who on their day have beaten Real at their gaff but have also been beaten by west ham at ours. Thats whats frustrating. But wont it be worth the wait if these guys do fulfil their potential.

  15. Yogi, fully agree!! Patience is required as is not reading all the crap written by idiot journos and especially spouted by morons on Talk Shite!

What we really need is for Adrian Durham to do an article on Arsenal being finished at the start of next season he has done it twice before and both times we ended up wining the league!

  16. Good work YW

There is not much one can really say about Woody’s comment other than to totally disagree.

I don’t think we have had so much quality in our squad ever. However we don’t have PV4, Bob, DB10 etc, who are/were truly exceptional players – you just cannot buy those players. I really don’t think there are that many ready made outstanding talents, that make the difference, out there- even if you had the Russian’s money.

So we have to build on what we have and supplement where we can.

What we need above all is for the players to get that bit more out of themselves & their team-mates to become THE players of their day just like those mentioned.

Cesc, RVP, Denilson, Djourou are clearly exceptional talents & I wouldn’t bet against Clichy, Diaby, Ade & Theo either.

That is why AW has to be so careful about who is brought in.

Kathic you surprise me with your comments regarding Wembley. Unless you live that way it is a nightmare to get to and would change the total concept of “going down the Arsenal”. Going to the Emerates is not much different to Highbury.

Again it is the patience thing the rewards from being at the Emerates will be there quite soon. Wembley could have been an absolute disaster.

The DD situation has muddied the waters. To what extent we will find out over the next few months & years.

No one is bigger than the club but some get closer than others.

  17. It’s indicative of the society we live in i’m afraid. No-one wants to wait anymore or work hard for their goals, everyone wants something now and with little or no effort. This is the reason that so many people don’t care who runs the club “as long as they’ve got cash!”. It’s the same people who lambast (ie not reasonable criticism but disrespectful hate) the likes of Henry or Ljungberg etc etc (fantastic servants of the club)… if they have a bad season or even a bad run of games. It doesn’t matter how much they’ve given to the club, all they want is them out and new players in.. They don’t have any regard for the character and heart of a club. They have the mistaken impression that a few trophies would make us feel much better in some way and justify the corporate ownership and large player turnover that they want.. The question i would ask them is this… Why are there thousands of people who support clubs in the lower reaches of the prem and right through to the minor leagues? They have no hope of winning trophies, they support because they love their club and it gives them something back personally to do so.. That’s why i support Arsenal, not because they may or may not have a silver cup at the end of the year.. For me that is a bonus and something i look forward to. I will never be one to turn on my club because they are not competing for the treble every year.. Even this year Arsenal gave me a lot of enjoyment (also frustration but that’s part of the deal).. If you are getting no enjoyment from supporting your club, then you must ask yourselves why.

  18. Spot on Jimmy !!

  19. Jimmy, class comments.

  20. Cheers Lads, i just really think some people have got their priorities completely screwed up when it comes to being a supporter. Unfortuntely most of that particular breed of fan don’t contribute to this messageboard (thankfully in a way) so probably won’t get through to them. Oh well.

  21. jimmy, your comments are all well and good from a fans prospective and the majority of us will all be there come rain or shine, however the problem is with the players not the fans, they are the ones that cannot wait for success, they are the ones complaining about the quality and depth of the squad and they are ultimately the ones who will decide if they stay or go and therefore whether arsenal are in transition or on a longer term decline. fact is henry, gallas, fabregas etc will not wait for five years to see if diaby, denilson and walcott develop as we all hope, they want to win and compete now. If you can not get your manager to commit to the long term what chance do you have. what needs to happen is wenger needs to come and state his intentions and steady the ship, without that we will not be able to sign good players and the better players will as they currently are threaten to leave if we do nothing again next year.

  22. Interesting

  23. Dan

We have enough to compete now – an inspired signing or 2 could help but we are v close.

Some of the comments are as if the performance in the CC Final & the double over Man U didn’t happen.

There were a lot of difficulties last season that hopefully won’t apply next & who knows what the players really think?

Perhaps that’s the trouble with the close season we all have too much time to think.

    Players will always be transient.

  24. clearly we all have too much time to think!!!!! obviously we all have different opinions about whether we are good enough to compete, personally i think 20+ points differences between us and the champions in the past two years are more more indicative than two wins against utd (we can all look at our record against west ham if we go down that route) to show we are not currently able to compete for the league. 3 good signings could change that, but how optimistic are you that we will be seeing 3 good signings this summer. unfortnately the club are not giving us too much to cling on to at the moment, and the players at every opportunity seem to be having a dig at the club as well, so it is no surprise that so many fans are so negative at the moment

  25. Perhaps this might cheer you up Dan.

The last time we finished on 68 points was 1996/97.

    What happened the season after?

I would agree that a 90 point haul is unlikely with or without new signings.

However the PL needs to have more competitive clubs who can take points off the top teams. Something like the Championship last season. That would be really good for football.

You should see a stronger Villa, Newcastle , Everton & even Spurs.

This would mean the league can be won with fewer points.

It could also mean we finish in 5th or 6th place but so be it -the real world is something we have not been in for 10 years. The world goes round & then you appreciate it more when it comes your way.

  26. Dan, if our record last season against West Ham indicates an inability to compete then logically ManU are also unable to compete.

  27. no amos, the point i was making is that you can not pin point certain results and say look at how good we are, (ie west ham beat us twice as we did to utd). the league is over 38 games and that shows how good you are, and having been 20 points off the pace for the past two years and never being in the race, realistically indicates where our current level is. that is not a complaint, i am not having a go at them just stating the facts.

  28. I take your point dan. But the fact that we have done pretty well against the big teams should tell us that we aren’t out of the race. Our record against the smaller teams tells us something is missing but also that the problem is not insurmountable. Had it been the other way around then I think the questions would go a little deeper.

I agree that 20+ points is a big gap to bridge but I also agree with Flint above when he says that the top 10 teams are probably getting closer together and that the points total required to win may not be as high. We can improve and we will improve I am sure of that.

  29. dan: My comment was in no way meant to imply that we shouldn’t be ambitious and strive for success, of course we should. I think we are deficient in a few areas and i too hope that we make a few well considered signings. I also however am not a member of the group who think we are on the brink of some kind of terminal decline.. As regards the players i do get frustrated with some of the comments that find their way into the press. But we have to be aware that these players are constantely bombarded with leading questions all the time in press conferences and interviews and they have to answer. Often it is the case of the journalist being a bit more crafty than the player is aware, and before you know it there is a backpage spread.

  30. i fear that if wenger doesn’t get it right this summer we will be in for short to mid term decline. this is a huge summer and i said before i think he needs to commit himself to club and start from there, because how are we going to sign the right players if wenger will not gaurantee that he will be their for the long haul.

  31. Well said, Jimmy!

We’re not just any club. We’re THE ARSENAL! This is the kind of class we as fans should have.

If one wants trophies every year, he could have supported Chelsea over the past 2-3 years until hopping on the ManU bandwagon in the last season and then, who knows, he might start falling in love with yet another club come next season. Or how about supporting ManU or Chelsea in the league and Liverpool in the cups?

Of course we’d love to bring trophies back to Arsenal and with a style. But if a couple of “disappointing” seasons (despite reaching a CL final and multiple great performances, especially against the best teams in the league) would send us to hell moaning and complaining and bitching, we’re not worthy of coming back and winning again! We ourselves should have strong faith in the club before we have the right to question our players of the lack of it.

And something just occured to me regarding our nick “the Gunners”. I guess we’re so lucky to have such a great nick, not something as soft or irrelevant (to the sport) as “magpies” or “toffees” or some no-character names like “reds” or “blues”. What do gunners actually do? By definition they are part of a troop, they are strong and fearless men, they gear up, they SHOOT! Especially in bad times like these, let’s just remember who we really are.

  32. Drew, anytime you people praise Senderos I get upset as if you’ve not been watching matches or Senderos has not been given enough opportunities to prove himself. Look, AFC is not a laboratory to go on experimenting. And please don’t try to compare Sendy to TA because TA was up after one season but Swiss Tony seem to have hit the wall in terms of development. Did you watch the CC finals, FA with Blackburn, Shelfield United game, PSV first round and on and on? The guy is always a fatal mistake awaiting. He is not Arsenal quality; One needs more than ability to head to became a good CB, this guy is poor on the ground lack pace against swift forwards, he is poor at turning. There are so many problems with him. Yes Djourou is trainable but not Swiss Tony, its over. Why is it that Steve Bruce of Birmingham wants Djourou on loan but not Swiss Tony? Because as a former defender himself he knows Sendy is not good enough. Sendy is not AFC quality that’s why even Arsene prefers Silva to Sendy at CB when Toure is absent. We need to go for a new back-up and I suggest either Micah Richards or Curtis Davies of WBA.

  33. Good bit of insight Louisa ;) .. Hadn’t thought about our nickname that way before.

  34. I agree that Senderos has fallen below the level on several occasions this season, but to call him a lost hope i think is too rash.. He is afterall our third choice centre back at best. I’m not convinced that you would convince Curtis Davies or Micah Richards to come and be backups next season. Apart from the fact that they would come with a 1st team regular price tag.

  35. Harlan – I would counter your argument by asking why you ignore Real Madrid x2, Juventus x 2, Villarreal etc.

I agree Swiss T has had a poor season but the bloke was injured at the start & never had a chance to get going.

The difference between TA & Swiss T is that Tony got the chance to be a regular mainly because of the lack of competition & he was certainly under less pressure in his early days.

I admit I am not sure about Swiss T but he deserves more time. His problem is he is not playing in a team set out to defend so he is more likely to be caught out than a CB playing for say Everton. For example that Alex looked great playing for PSV but they had 10 men behind the ball.

It is this attitude that our players are crap, after a few bad games, that really irritates me.

  36. I’m curious as to why we would spend £6-7m on players who are back-ups? Neither Davies nor Richards, from what I have seen of them, could displace Gallas or Toure. Neither is vastly experienced so they are young and need time to develop. Erm, hello that is what we have now and there is no guarantee that they will fare any better than anyone else at the club.

As to why Bruce wants Djourou, does it not occur to anyone that (a) AW probably wouldn’t loan PS out because he views him as first choice back up, (b) PS wouldn’t want to go there anyway and (c) Bruce recognises points (a) and (b)?

  37. Djourou is a far better player than Senderos.

  38. Potentially he probably is, but at the moment he has just as many flaws in his game as Senderos. Phil gets extra criticism because he’s not a naturally athletic footballer and can look cumbersome on occasion. In my opinion he played no worse than Gallas this season.

  39. jimmy if you admit that PS is not that athletic and that Asenal is not a defensive team but an attacking one then PS don’t fit in as he is always caught up in a counter attack. Another problem is that he is so heavy this season’ making him difficult to turn. I don’t know what the fitness guys are doing at London Colney. In short I don’t think PS can cut it with us. He is too muh of a risk to be relied upon in critical matches. We might be having another Cygan on our hands.

  40. The things that sticks out to me in all of this is that so many “fans” are yelling and moaning over players lack of loyalty to the club. One comment from a player that is deemed “out of line” and we are exposed to the howling of the hordes over these new cretins who are mercenary little so and sos. Yet when one of our players has a bad season, be it due to a lack of confidence, youth, perhaps even a lingering injury, far to many line up to throw them under a bus. Senderos is useless, Hoyte is terrible, I’m better then Ljungberg. If we claim that we want loyalty then in return we must be willing to give it, at least put forth the benefit of the doubt. We can say that Football is business, that they don’t have the goods, that they are not AFC material. What we cannot do is become surprised when the players act in the same manner, and see AFC as just a place of business themselves. I like to think of Arsenal as a community, based on Good, free flowing football. I’d rather support a mid table team , that shows loyalty, not only to its players, but to the ideals of fun, entertaining football, then support a team that wins with ten players behind the ball and the highest paid mercenary squad.

Before people begin to scream about being injured by my remarks, I think that there is a huge difference between constructively analysing and debating a players strengths and weaknesses, and throwing them under a bus. My criticism is aimed at those who want both worlds. The ability to rail against players who aren’t good enough, and demand that other players show nothing but loyalty.

  41. [...] In The Maloud-a And Fickle Public Speaking It seems that the impatient are to get their wish with some transfer activity being reported. The Independent says that […] [...]

  42. Drew/Amos,
I’m sensitive to the ambience, and the longer term viability issues you respectively raise.
But I regard the issue as one involving tradeoffs of importance: We’re currently in an environment, for better or worse, where spending levels have been insanely inflated. That means even prudence demands a bigger purse.
The one question to my mind is, had we taken the Wembley option over the short term , would Wenger have enjoyed more room for manoeuvre in the transfer market?
I reiterate that I don’t regard spending as a cure-all; but I do think that more financial breathing space would have helped.
As for having our own home, I essentially regard it as a matter of timing: Just when we lose the experienced core of our team, we’re faced with an insanely inflationary environment in which we’re financially hamstrung with a stadium development.I have always felt that we could have waited for the Highbury redevelopment to finish bringing in healthy cash flow, tiding over the time with an option on wembley, and then considered the new stadium project.
    Flint,
I appreciate the commute issues you raise. Could we have softened the pain with cheaper tickets, given lesser pressure on the cash flow, and the like? I don’t know.
    Amos,
Fair analysis of the Dein situation. But I have always regarded politics and business as the art of the possible. Press releases in such circumstances will always contain “irreconcilabe” etc. You can’t expect them to say “we just got bored of each other’s company” eh? I’d just like to point that I think both Dein and the board should get off their high horses and sit around a table. Remember it has taken a lot to build the club; I’m for every effort to keep a good thing going.
Reading through the healthy debate on the team’s quality was nice. I for one have complete faith in the squad, though I can’t help regard Senderos a weak link in it. He might well suit the style of play down in Italy/Spain, to address Flint’s arguement, But Wengerball? I don’t think he’s cut out for it.
May I be proved handily wrong.
