The backlash has begun. No sooner have Manchester United spent £50m on three players (if reports are to be believed) than the comments start about how we will finish twenty points behind them again, with Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham ahead of us as well. There is a belief that this is down to the Board being unwilling to invest ‘big’ money in players yet there is no evidence that Arsene wants to spend big. All we have to go on is the hugely unreliable speculation of the media frenzy, fed by supporters desires to see ‘names’ at the club, Mr 15%’s trying to talk up their clients chances of a money-spinning transfer to the Pot of Gold or in a large number of cases, wild misinterpretations of players comments, the speculation increased in direct proportion to the number of Magners sunk.
Unfortunately, the players have a tendency to increase the dissatisfaction, albeit unintentionally. Step forward, Thierry Henry, as the latest squad member to express unhappiness at the way last season went. Nothing wrong in that except that his injuries and generally unhappy demeanour post Germany did not help matters. Without having seen all of the Press Conference he spoke at yesterday, I may be doing him an injustice by pointing out that he did not acknowledge the plight of himself and RvP as being major factors in the final league position. What has irked me about his comments is that he believes the bald fact to be that we need more experience. Henry rightly pointed out that we lost a huge pool of talent at the end of 2005-06 which was replaced by a pool of youth. Yet in naming those dearly departed he missed out on the essential factor, namely quality. The players who replaced them were not as good as Bergkamp and Pires. No disrespect to the current squad intended, it is just that those two were footballing geniuses (or should that be genei?). Rosicky is a good player but not a winger in Pires’ mould. Baptista had a ‘mare’ at Arsenal yet came with a reputation that made him seem that he would add to the squad. It did not work out but that is one of the risks you take in football.
Henry is quoted as saying he knows what it takes to be a champion, how he was a member of the ‘49-ers’. Correct and an integral part. He is frustrated that we have finished 4th twice. So are we. I hope, as a senior player and Captain, that he had made these comments to Arsene privately. If he had, and he still made them publicly, then one has to assume he was told, as our American cousins put it, to ‘butt out’ or he did not like the answers he was given by AW.
His bland answer of ‘experience’ does not wash. He knows that consistency is required. Flashing the cash is not always the correct response to the situation. Does Henry not have faith in the abilities of his fellow players? Maybe his thoughts should have been more focussed on the positions that need filling rather than sweeping generalisations. One thing that was evident is that he is committed to the Club yet even his response trying to kill off speculation is fuelling more speculation. The latest is £17m plus Eto’o for Henry. Yep, I’ll take that one. Not because Eto’o is better than Henry (I put them almost on a par with Henry slightly ahead) but that is silly money, valuing Henry at about £40m. Silliest story of the close season so far though or hiding the truth, a version of it anyway.
However, it raises the question as to where Henry believes we need more experience. A quick thought popped into my head about the defence on this one. Gallas and Toure are experienced yet no-one seems to ‘boss’ the defence. Would it be better to make Henry Club Captain and give the armband to Toure rather than Gilberto? This identifies the ‘Leader Of The Pack‘ at the back and gives good reason to one person to give the orders on the pitch. Whilst the experienced pros ought not to need to do this, perhaps the defence does need a focal point?

I’ve been trying really hard not to read too much into the latest reported comments by TH, but if it’s true ‘I’m an Arsenal player for now’ is very different to ‘I’m here for life’ as he was reportedly saying only a few short weeks ago.
The need for ‘experience’ can be over-emphasised – there are many teams out there with very experienced professionals who did not do much. Quality plus experience is what is required. Where were some of our most experienced players such as Henry, Ljungberg and Gallas last season? We needed them to balance the squad and they were not available due to injury. If they could step up the way the youngsters have done and stop complaining we’d be much better off. But if they’d rather blame their young team mates than look at themselves and what they could and should be contributing to the cause they can leave as no player should be bigger than the club.

If that Eto’o + 17mil was true, I would bite their hands off. On top of that I would instantly install Fabregas as club captain. I think he has all the makings of a brilliant skipper. He is considered and eloquent off the pitch and a true leader on it. I know he is young but so was Tony Adams. I have never been convinced of Henry as captain anyway. Still I don’t suppose there is anything in the rumour after all it came from Marca!

We’ve discussed the “experience” question over and over know. I totally agree with Yogi W that what we actually need is quality. Pires and Bergkamp simply have not yet been replaced in the team.
In my opinion, RvP will be a great replacement for Dennis, and was well on his way to taking that mantle before his injury. Mark my words, he’ll be our most important player in 2 years’ time.
Also, for the last 2 or 3 years, the elder statesmen of the club have let the team down as much as the juniors. Whether this is due to complacency or the pressure of having to lead the team with their “experience”, I don’t know.

While it is true we haven’t replaced Bergkamp and Pires its is also true that they are pretty much “almost” irreplaceable. Add to that the move to the new stadium and the effect both on that home mentality and also spending power (we would need to spend quite a bit to replace those 2) we have had to rely on some very talented but also very young players. I believe Cesc Van Persie and Rosicky will be able to fill the gap left by them, in terms of creativity and goals. The fact that it takes 3 to replace 2 is a testement to their quality. This however was a non starter this season due to long term injury to VanP and Rosicky’s continual niggling injuries. Next season will see this develop…hopefully. And with Henry fully fit and hungry we wont want for goals imo.

Firstly his comment saying “for now” is AS REPORTED. it doesn’t say what he exactly said, or in what language, and we know too well journalists love translating foreign quotes to suit themselves.
Most of this is newspaper bollocks so don’t waste your time typing about it.

There are a few questions over the captain of Arsenal.
Toure whilst a great player and totally commited to the cause, has been exposed a bit this season. There have been calls for him to play in CM as the holding midfielder, replacing Gilberto which could be an option.
We have Gallas, who is probably a better defender that Toure. Not much in it but if I had to choose one it would be Gallas. He need a big guy next to him, ala Vidic, or Terry. We have Djourou or Senderos, who are improving and the CB’s in the wings are of the same ilk.
Can Toure and Gallas play together?
Against pace, yes, this is where they are at their best, they are both strong and quick and can deal with a pacy front line.
However aerial balls seem to be a problem, and with a small midfield and full backs we seem weak here. We need more height in the team.
I note Eto is smaller than Henry, and Ribery is tiny as well.

It doesn’t matter how many times any player ‘commits’ themselves to a club for life, which Thierry has also said often enough, ‘for now’ is all any player can truthfully say. At the end of next season TH will be halfway through the new 4 year deal he signed last summer. Who knows whether Arsenals needs will be the same then as now? Who can say for sure whether THs wishes remain the same, least of all himself ? But you can say is that he is an Arsenal player for now and is likely to remain one. Hanging the man because two words in a statement don’t bear the forensic examination of those seeking the slighest negative undertone seems a gross over reaction to me.

If he said it, so what?! He owes us nothing and good luck to him. What pees me off is this under 21 squad we have – I’m fed up of it! Buy players over the age of 25 please Wenger!

I am with Passenal & Sue.
TH14 will be well aware of what happened to PV4 so there is no point reading too much into the “for now” quote.
The squad on paper has enough experience but the experienced players have not kept fit & at times not stepped up to the mark , more especially during the 2005/06 season.
Quality & time are the key. I believe we have the quality but have we got the time?

Leaving aside Henry’s undoubted skills & ability it has to be said that he is probably the worst captain our club has ever had and I wonder if it is more than coincidence that some fans (inc me) have raised big doubts about him since he was installed. We have been blessed over the years with some great captains(McLintock,Adams & Vieira to name 3) and they all led the team from the front both in commitment and encouraging those around them. Henry’s style as captain seems to be constant criticism of teamates and imo he played a huge part in killing the spirit of Reyes which led to his departure. Now he comes out in an interview (speaking in english harry barracouda !) saying that he is an arsenal player for now ?? What sort of message is that sending to his teamates and fans ? I understood last season when he considered going to barca and would have wished him well if he had done so but he seems to think now that cos he stayed he has the right to make demands on the club regarding future purchases. We are all frustrated at the way our season has gone and there is no doubt that we need at least 2 top top signings (winger & striker) but comments like his should be kept in-house unless he is trying to engineer a move for himself. I would agree again that we miss the quality that DB10 % Bob brought to the table but it should also be pointed out that for the last 2 summers we have lost considerably more players in numbers than we have brought in which has made our squad lighter in numbers and quality and I cant see this summer being any different. To me this whole thing keeps coming back to the boardroom – if our current board cannot provide the funds necessary to improve the team & squad then please bring in an outside investor (like kroenke) because failure to do will see us slip further behind the 3 above us and watching sp**s,villa & west ham outspend us in a bid to overtake us. Having a beautiful new stadium is all well and good but should we have another season or 2 like this will we still be able to fill it ? David Dein could see problems ahead and if he (a man I would trust 100%) thinks we need new investors then I am happy to go with that

Henry was indeed shown on sky sports news and they were indeed his words “for now”, i’m getting frustrated as all arsenal talk on telly is about players leaving whereas all talk on man utd, liverpool or chelsea is about buying players !!
I’m also worried that we’ll sit here all summer watching the same teams mentioned above strengthening their teams while we dont sign anyone at all until 11:59pm last day of transfer window, as a fan its just to frustrating to watch !! I want us to sign players early so they can get involved with the team well before the season starts and play in our pre season friendlies so come the start of the season they may have already settled a bit !
Henry will stay, i think his reasons for saying “for now” are his frustrations that we may be in the same situation at the end of next season, and if we finish with nothing again next season i think he will re-evaluate his position at arsenal as he wants to win things before he retires as surely any winner does, he has given his all for arsenal but there will come a time when, if we arent going in the right direction for him, he will think about leaving us. Thats life and he cant go on forever, he will always be a hero at the emirates no matter what happens

I agree with Amos.
On top of that, when it’s all said and done, we’ve all heard Thierry Henry speak in press conferences and in general and I hardly suspect he emphasised the “for now” in a way that really meant anything.
The important thing is to look at the facts – we have a world class player who is captain of a club team he is 100% committed to and he is constantly being asked the same things about how it is at Arsenal etc etc
Who wouldn’t be frustrated? I think it’s easy to ignore the transfer speculation/lies but I’m surprised that so many people are taking this Thierry Henry article to heart.
I am completely behind Henry, he will not be going anywhere and I would be frustrated if I was him, having to justify myself in every interview.

There are only so many times that TH14 can confirm by his actions – signing a new 4 year contract last yr – and his words
that he intends to stay at Arsenal for the foreseeable future.
It must be incredibly frustrating to be continually asked about his future by the media…and then, just because he fails to make an absolute pledge of allegiance to the club each & every time he’s asked, his words are overanalysed and miscontrued by both media and many supposed Arsenal fans alike.
The bottom line is, TH14 will be at Arsenal next season and probably for the seasons after that too. End of.

Eto’o + 17 million for Henry?
To my mind, there shouldn’t be more than 5 million in cash seperating the two.
If this is true, and I don’t believe it is, I’d be worried. Why are Barca so desperate to unload Eto’o that they are throwing in such a purse with the man?
Does this have something to do with the dressing room troubles we heard about last season? Will we be getting a troublemaker sugar coated with 17 million? Thanks, but no thanks.
Would Curtis Davies be a good signing?
First choice alongside Gallas, with Toure, donning the captain’s armband, moving to CM alongside Cesc?
Can we try a Davies-Gallas first choice pairing with Gilberto as fallback at CB?
Will a season, on loan, at Birmingham city, under a manager who was a fine defender, benefit Djourou?

why is anyone surprised by TH’s comments. He wants to play in a winning team full stop, he is not an idiot and can see that this current team and lack of investment is going no where. Most fans can also see it, however unlike him , we are stuck with it, he has the power to get out while he can.

I don’t know what went wrong in Barca’s dressing room to make them consider swapping Eto’o for Henry and give away another 17m pounds.
Assuming nothing is wrong with Eto’o’s head, then I will rip their hands off now and do the deal in 10 mins!
TH is getting older, slower and hopefully wiser. Eto’o is younger, more tigerish and hungry. Who do I prefer? Eto’o. Main reason – TH controls the way we play. Every opponent knows that. There are no more surprises we can spring on opponents.
