Beast, Arsene And Adopting A Defensive Tone.

Julio Baptista has finally confirmed what everyone expected in that he is back to Madrid, partly I suspect because Reyes is apparently not staying at Real but mainly because he could not justify a €20m fee, such is the rumoured value that has been placed on his head, For whatever reason, it just did not happen for the lad; only the really picky could fault his effort but he never really threatened to hit the expectation levels of supporters – is that our fault or his? – because aside from the six goals in the games against Liverpool and Tottenham, you have to say that four in thirty three matches is really not good enough. It would have been interesting to see what a second season would have produced but unfortunately for him, the club is at a stage where we cannot afford to carry passengers, especially those that represent a huge investment. Had he joined two summers ago, would things have been different? Perhaps, for a season at Madrid undoubtedly did little good for his confidence but it has not happened for him at
Arsenal so all that remains is to say ‘Adios and thanks for your efforts“.

At this point, you are expecting me to comment on Le Boss’s trip to Madrid, aren’t you. Well, I’m not. Does he ask me when I disappear off on business trips with my Boss? No. Respect it; he went with Keith Edelman and if they come back having solved a couple of problems without creating new ones then that is good enough for me. Even if they did not solve any existing problems, I hope they had a good time because it’s a great city for a night out.

Emmanuel Adebayor has been forgiven by the Togolese FA, who have lifted their suspension on him from Interational Football. Whilst I am sure that the player is relieved, from a purely selfish point of view, my initial reaction was ‘b*llocks’ as there is one more person to add to the list of absentees next February time when the African Cup Of Nations takes place, assuming of course that Togo qualify, which they seem on course to do.

The one thing that has really got me thinking is Tony Adams desire to manage the Club at some point in the future. Now he has done nothing to suggest that he is Arsene’s Heir Apparent in terms of the managerial side of things; with all due respect to Wycombe, they are not the ideal club from which to leap into the Arsenal role, even if you have been to Portsmouth and Breda in between. However, consider this. Last season we were not quite woeful in defence but not far from it by Arsenal standards. In 2005-06, Martin Keown brought some defensive expertise to the coaching side, so why not use Adams now for that role, ‘dangling the carrot’ – oh come on, you knew there would be a cheap shot in here somewhere – of understudying Wenger from the management perspective also? There does not have to be a firm commitment, i.e. you will be the next Arsenal manager for this to work – but surely Adams would recognise the benefits of learning from Le Boss? And by no stretch of the imagination should anyone assume that I want or believe that he should be the next Arsenal manager; he needs a good several seasons of success somewhere else to prove he has what it takes but it is a beneficial start for both parties, is it not?

For those who doubt it, look at Portsmouth last season; there was a marked improvement in their defence on the previous season. In large parts, that was due to the personnel on the pitch but off of it, the instruction has to be there and credited, as well. We misfired last time around; it takes a big man to recognise this and a big man to fill it.

Last for today, a tad of site news. There will be a short break in posting, this being the last until Monday morning since the lunatic that passes for my Brother In Law has decided to get married on Saturday up in some Arsenal end of nowhere ‘Oop North’. Bon Chance to the Bride and Groom to be and may you all have a good weekend but especially them. And hey people, let’s be careful out there. Keep some sanity when reading the drivel that the media will serve us up.

’til Monday

  1. Totaly agree, since Don Howe has left the club we lack any defensive coaching expertise. Old Donkey would be a great signing as a coaching role. Altho as i have said we still lack that English spirit in the cnetre of the pitch so we need some uk signings to help give us back our old never say die ways…

    Eeeeeeeee Awwwwwwwwwwww.!!!!!!!!

  2. Arsene feels obliged to justify his purchase of Adebeyor. That is a pity because he is going to keep some good players out of the side.
He is supposed to be scoring goals yet he is still behind Van Persie and Henry and they have been out for half the season.

  3. Why don’t we bring back Don Howe? He is the best defensive coach in Britain. Also bring back someone who can coach us on set peices, what happened to our famous near post corner routine? That was good for 10 goals a season

  4. Morning.

Wenger has commented on the fact that the defensive side of the game is not his strong point. I get the feeling that William Gallas wants to be delegated this duty, and I think Arsene should do that.

I would love to see TA6 back at the club in some way. I can never see Rice becoming our next manager but I admire the man and the values he embodies. It would be wrong to shunt him to one side just because another legend has clicked his fingers.

Arsenal is in Wenger’s DNA. We’re more than a football club to him. He’s put blood, sweat and tears into making us a global club rather than slipping back and becoming the Aston Villa (pre-takeover) of London.

I remember Wenger once commenting that that his youth policy is not just for him but to give the next Arsenal manager the best possible start. Arsene won’t be around forever and he’s clearly got the well-being and security of the club at the forefront of his mind.

As such, he may want to do waht Ferguson is doing with Quieroz, grooming a successor. Adams would be a popular choice.

Fuck knows what’s going to happen once Wenger calls it a day. If he plays a part in appointing his successor, it will soften the blow.

Talking about the day Wenger leaves has upset me. I blame you, Yogi. You’ve upset me!

  5. I had the same thought about Tony Adams returning as a defence coach, while learning the broader aspects of management. I watched Villa v Portsmouth on SKY a few weeks ago; it ended up 0-0 and Gray commented several times on how well organised the Pompey defence was this season. Later, the camera zoomed in on TA in the dugout and Gray said ‘That is why they are so well-organised defensively.’

The only problem is that TA has said in an interview earlier this week that he doesn’t want to be an assistant manager any more. He doesn’t like not having the full responsibility for what goes on, so it doesn’t sound like he would be up for an assistant manager job at Arsenal. Arsene is notoriously difficult to work with too, as he wants to control every aspect of the way the team play.

  6. G10

    Calm yourself.

Personally, I would be surprised if AW is not around for another 3 or 4 years.

As for Pat Rice, I don’t think he expects to be AW’s replacement nor do I think TA should be the current No. 2. Make him responsible for the defensive part of the game and let PR do what he does.

    YW

  7. 1. I’m glad that we’re not signing the Beast…thanks Julio for
your efforts and best wishes for the rest of your career
    and life.

    2. I think that we should appoint an experienced person to be
the defence coach and in my view, Arsenal & Arsene should
swallow their pride/ego, and appoint George Graham
    specifically for this role.

    3. I also think that we need a 6ft plus, commanding ball
playing central defender with pace to play alongside
Gallas, as I think that Toure is too vulnerable in the air,
and too short as well for that position. Yes, Cannavarro is
short, but he’s the exception to the rule.

  8. With the form he showed in this season, it was clear that Baptista is not an Arsenal material. Especially for the price tag. He may have stayed in the club, but with healthy Henry, Van Persie, Adebayor and Bendter, his playing time would decreade quite a lot.

  9. Toure has been a rock at the back for many seasons so why is he suddenly too short for the role? If Cannavaro can do it, so can Toure. The defence just needs to be better organised.

I’m wary of the TA situation. Just because he was a great player for us doesn’t mean he’d be a great coach. He needs a lot more experience before he should even be considered for the role and I would expect to see a couple of managers *after Wenger before he would be ready for the job. Being able to organise Portsmouth’s defence is one thing, but having the knowledge and skills to manage a team in both European and domestic competitions is another.

*Sorry to add further upset G10 but I’m trying to prepare myself for the inevitable sad day, which I hope will be a few years away yet!

  10. We have no idea what defensive coaching goes on or who is best suited to it.

Pat Rice was part of good defences and a coach at the club during the days of the famous back 4.

It is, as we have discussed before, a matter of the whole team defending properly & concentration.

I am confident that we shall see a different William Gallas next season. With a settled defence that should make a huge improvement.

Let’s hope Arsene is around for a long long time time yet, but when he does go I think it will be impossible to directly replace him. He is so much more than just a manager that the role may have to be split in some way.

Much as I admire Tony Adams can anyone actually see him as a replacement for AW?

It would surely have to be along the lines that he, or Martin Keown (or anyone else you care to mention), would be purely football with someone else doing the rest of what is involved.

  11. Hi chaps,

Ribery has said today that “everything will be a lot clearer next week” regarding his future. (see http://home.skysports.com/transferarticle.aspx?hlid=468590)

I personally think Ribery would be a super player for us, solving the lack of pace/out and out winger in our squad.

With Marsielles’ qualification for the CL; L’Equipe saying that Bayern, Juve and Barca are the front runners and the fact that we do not really seem to be in a postion to make any move on Ribery until Reyes or Ljungberg are moved on (which may or may not happen by next week) is Ribery’s relevation an early indicator that we are going to miss out on him?

  12. Flint,
“It is, as we have discussed before, a matter of the whole team defending properly & concentration.”
    Fair point.
I agree that teams that are defensively solid defend from way up the pitch, strikers down. That, however, hasn’t prevented me from often fantasising ruefully about grafting the back four from the “1-0 to the Arsenal” days on to the midfield and offence of the “invincibles” of the unbeaten season.
Anyhow, substantial and urgent effort is necessary to tighten up the defence.
    Passenal,
We aren’t getting full returns on Toure’s physique and mobility by playing him at CB, regardless of the quality of his performances there. I think we’d be making optimal use of his traits by playing him at centre midfield or right back, giving him greater freedom to move around and express himself.
Last summer there was a lot of humming and hawing about Curtis Davies. Does anyone know whether Arsene is still interested? Also, any views on the player from those more familiar with West Brom?

  13. I get your point re Toure, Karthic, but I’m just saying that no-one thought this before Gallas came into the side and if I were Toure I might feel a little put out that the position I’ve made my own for several seasons is suddenly taken away because of someone who may not stay beyond another season. I think we need to give that partnership a bit more time before disrupting the defence again. Djourou and Senderos are both promising defenders, but I’m not sure that either are ready to be full time centre backs.

  14. Arsenal so all that remains is to say ‘Adios and thanks for your efforts“.

  16. Passenal,
    Fair point.
I can only hope Toure will relish the freedom to be more centrally involved in games!
William Gallas is the wild card. Will he turn out to be mercenarial- is that a word?- with his loyalties is the question.
This is going to demand every bit of Arsene’s managerial acumen.
    We’ll see.
