Player Ratings For The Season

Change of plans for today; rather than try to match Flint’s eloquence from yesterday and Frank’s for tomorrow, my season review takes for the form of a school report for the players.

Player Grade Headmaster’s Comments
Jens Lehmann B Still one of the top ‘keepers in the Division, consistently good shot stopper. Constant complaints about perceived fouls distract himself and others so needs to regain his focus.
Manuel Almunia B Did well in the cups. Could be consistent as the No.1 keeper for the team although he will need to hope Arsene has bought a pup in Fabianski for that to happen.
Emmanuel Eboue B- Failed to improve on his impressive form of 2005-06, losing a lot of defensive discipline in the process. A move to midfield would suit his attacking instincts but has to cut out the theatrics.
Justin Hoyte B More reliable defensively than Eboue, not as confident going forward although the potential is there, indicated by his finish against Charlton. My own personal choice as RB ahead of Eboue.
Kolo Toure A- The most consistent defensive performer this season when not paired with Gallas. When they are together, can be caught out of position. Scored a number of important goals.
William Gallas B- Injury-interrupted season meant we have not seen the best of him. Needs to show more leadership on the pitch as the most experienced Centre Half at the Club with more modesty off it.
Phillipe Senderos C A confidence player who benefits from a run in the side. A solid tackler. Gets unfair criticism for mistakes which seem to haunt him. Needs one good game against Drogba to build self-belief.
Johann Djourou B Solid and versatile although better in defence to my mind. An excellent player for the future and may well do better as a defensive partner for Toure than Gallas. Of the two Swiss players, the one I would tip for a long Arsenal career
Gael Clichy A- Personally I think he is a better player than **** was at a similar age. Very quick, pace that helps him to recover his position defensively. Very consistent in the second half of the season.
Armand Traore C Impressive in the Carling Cup run. Given a bit of a baptism of fire by Lennon and Robben but did not shirk from the task. Will give Clichy a run for his money in the future.
Abou Diaby B Recovered well from his injury and gives his all, even when picked as a supporting striker. A very promising prospect.
Cesc Fabregas A Excellent season. Shows great maturity on the pitch and off it. Took part in more matches than any other player. Needs to score more though. Get that right and he will be considered amongst the best in the World.
Tomas Rosicky B+ Impressive first season which would have been better had he not missed a third of it through injury. Winner of the ‘Miss of the Season’ award. When he is absent from the team, it shows.
Freddie Ljungberg C The mind is willing but the body is not able. Struggles for goals, the important part of his game.. Perhaps should be released so that we can can hold onto the fond memories.
Alexander Hleb B- Much maligned but a good passer of the ball with excellent dribbling skills. Should shoot more often because he is tremendous finisher when he gets it right.
Denilson B Impressive when he came on although looks more comfortable in the middle than the wing. Learns fast with excellent ball distribution.
Gilberto A+ My Player of the Season. Consistent in his defensive duties and contributed ten goals, making him third top scorer in the League. An excellent Captain who leads by example.
Mathieu Flamini B A solid player, does what is asked of him but lacks that little bit extra to challenge for a regular spot in the team.
Thierry Henry B+ Injuries wrecked his season but still second top scorer. If fully fit next term, he should be back with a point to prove to the doubters. A scary thought indeed for Defenders.
Robin van Persie A The loss to injury. Top scorer despite missing a third of the season, scorer of Goal of the Season. Would have been everyone’s Player of the Year if he had been able to carry on.
Emmanuel Adebayor A The hardest working player at the Club? Runs for everything. Needs to improve his conversion rate to hold down a starting place. Marvellous strength of character to overcome the doubters.
Jeremie Aliadiere D Has the ability but seems to unable to produce consistently. Is one of those players who, at the moment, struggles in the spotlight. May do better at a ’smaller’ club.
Julio Baptista D My mum says, ‘Don’t say anything if you can’t say anything nice’. Has the ability but only God knows what went wrong. Julio and Arsene don’t because they would have put it right.
Theo Walcott B Got better as the season went on, culminating in the goal at Cardiff. With more experience next season, he should start to fulfill his potential.

As for the others, well they did not make enough appearances to give them a ‘mark’ for the season.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Yogi,
    You’re concise and precise.Congratulations.
I, however, have a couple of quibbles:
I have lost faith in Senderos. Yes, he has attributes that are essential in a class defender, but he also has foibles, of which we have seen quite enough this season to warrant description, that are fatal in one, specially at premiership level.Glad as I’d be to be proved wrong, I think we should sell him right away.
Likewise with A.Hleb. You highlight his virtues fairly, but I think the choice, elaborated in my “wish-list” team posted below, boils down to keeping either Hleb or Rosicky. I’ll go with Rosicky.
I don’t think Gallas will ever be a “humble” person; that’s just his make-up. But so long as he performs for Arsenal at the level he’s capable of, doesn’t disrupt the dressing room, and, most importantly, passes on sound lessons in the art of defending to Djourou et al, our money would have been well spent.
Here’s my “wish-list” team, that I also posted in a comment at “Arsenal Analysis” blog, to get a discussion going on the transfers, and the next season:
    Format: First choice/Fallback.
    Goal:
    Jens/Fabianski
    Defense:
    Micah Richards/Hoyte
    Gilberto/Djourou (Hat Tip: Flint)
    Gallas/Summer purchase
    Clichy/Traore
    Midfield:
    Eboue/Walcott
    Cesc/Denilson
    Toure/Diaby
    Henry/Rosicky
    Attack:
    Rvp & (Trezeguet or Anelka)/Ade.
I consciously highlight moving Henry back to the wing just to spark debate on the possibility. If we buy a left winger who can work the flanks well, Henry, ofcourse, will continue as a striker.
I think this Arsenal team has the necessary essentials to evolve into a Rinus Michels style “Total Football” team. It’d be quite something if that is achieved: A mobile attacking total football style that wins the league and the European cup.
Can this team do it? Yes, with a couple of judicious additions, and maturity, I don’t see why not.
I usually stay away from personal diatribes and feuds, but achieving the above mentioned goals will be the best answer Arsene and the lads can give J.Mourinho. While his teams display commendable spirit, Mourinho’s personal behaviour is unacceptable and unjustified. It is my hope, nay belief, that
the day will come when this Arsenal side will win the European cup, not to mention the league, and do it in a style that Mourinho can never even dream about.
It’d be a travesty if Arsenal don’t win the European cup under Wenger.
    We’ll see.

  2. I surely agree with the ratings although i think Jens should get a letter C. and Toure B because sometimes like against Shefield United he let us down.

  3. Excellent work Yogi!
My only, BIG, difference with it: GILBERTO SILVA
I have love him for more than a season, but his fails (too slow and kind of distracted some times) cost us the game at PSV, as well as Reading goal (we won any way), and few others. May be is just that I can’t live with his remarks on Juventus interest.
Fabregas and Toure would be my players of the season.
Be ready for next season, we are going to have much more As, and B+!!!!

  4. Quite a good break down. I don’t know about Rosicky getting a B+ though. I think his performances were quite some way under the standard of Kolo and Clichy.

  5. I think your ratings are fairly accurate except for Henry and Adebayor… below are my honest opinion on how our season went..

Henry failed bigtime.. be it bcoz of injuries/lack of humility/too much moaning
    i’d give him a C-

Adebayor had his chances.. which is more than you can say for poor Aliadiere.. who never had a longer run in the team! Forget effort and hard work(prerequisite for ALL players playing in EPL).. hes a striker and should be judged as one! his strike rate is poor to put it mildly. NOT GOOD ENUFF by a country mile
    a clear F

and you forgot/didnt rate Le Boss..

He is the Messiah.. but for this season.. I saw it coming.. selling almost all xperienced players and opted for majority of young inexperienced ones… he lost the plot this season.. the wanker Jose was right.. if u manage/build a team without the burden of expectations(winning the league/CL).. any Joes or Bobs can do it! We’re The Arsenal.. not the Spuds.. its just NOT good enuff Le Boss..
    for that .. I give Arsene a D!

  6. Adebayor does not warrant an A performance. Open your eyes and put your expectation, the love of a club and player aside and revaluate performance. He miss ‘a lot’ of chances, he does not have the composure to finish one on one period. Yes he is the perfect foil for us to play 4-5-1. Yes he is hard working but if you look closely his workrate is being driven by Robin V Persie. After RVP struck by injury his workrate had been decreasing. He is a striker and yet he only manage to score 1 goal more then Gilberto. If he does not improving and being complacent by his ‘I am in the heart of the fans’ belief then he should be kissing his lucky charm for being able to play first team in ‘big club’. However he is still young and the time is on his side. He deserve a B performance.

  7. redline

Sorry to disagree but for effort alone, Adebayor deserves a high rating. For three months, he was the *only* forward at the Club to put in the extra effort to score. If he could have converted more then he would have been the top scorer. You have to look at the context of the performances, i.e. the injuries to Henry and RvP, to understand that the work he put in.

    YW

  8. Good report, I mostly agree with you although I think you were a little harsh on Aliadiere. Maybe a C for his Carling Cup performances particularly at Anfield. It was just a shame that he could not reproduce that form in the Premiership. But I do agree that he may do better in a smaller team.

  9. I agree with Gilberto as player of the season. He took the responsibility & worked his socks off. He is not everyones’ “cup of tea” for the position because he is a reader rather than a rumbustuous tackler. He never was the best passer of the ball but he even improved there.

Cesc is very close behind with Kolo. Both of them had to play too much & had periods where they were not at their best.No one but no one is going to have a faultless season.

For me B+ for Jems & C for Jeremie.

Mind you I never got much over a D at school so they are all doing OK by my standards.

  10. Pliz the ratings were ok but the ONLY PROBLEM IS ON Aliadiere. He deserved more that what was given to him. I wish he played more games than Baptsita.

  11. I agree with your ratings more or less.
Rosiscky has been the most pleasant surprise of the team, considering his first season with the club.

  12. Fabregas was by far the best player this year. A straight A

  13. Did Baptista think that he was only considered a cup player, hence his heroics in the Carling Cup and under-achievement in the league? There seemed to be a serious confidence issue with him, which was a shame has a showed glimces of ability.

While I think Cesc had a good season, I was a little concerned by his lack of goals. While he creates great openings, I would like to see him use the strikers as a set-up for him to score in situations where he comes from the deep. He’s got the ability to strike accurately and incisively from around the box, and should exploit that talent.

Overall I saw plenty of good moments throughout the squad, but not enough consistently or gelled together. I hope this is a symptom of a young squad, and not falling standards from Arsene.
