Today’s post gives you a rest from my ramblings, these are Flint’s thoughts on the months past.
After 40+ seasons sitting in pretty good seats in the East Upper, at Highbury, moving to West Lower, at the Emirates, was both exciting and worrying. Now I don’t mind standing, I prefer sitting, but I just hate the old “up-down-up-down” routine all the time. As it has turned out that is not a problem, the stadium is fantastic, I am at last sitting with my mates and, from where we are, the atmosphere seems good and sometimes very good. I am afraid, for me, the old electric atmospheres died with the terraces.
From the playing perspective we were going into the season with some potential and some obvious problems:
- The loss of PV4, Bob,DB10, Sol, Lauren (although we didn’t know that would be permanent) etc. in 2 years. There has been some unrest that the club should have acquired experienced players to replace those mentioned. It would be great if such players, of equal quality and at the peak of their careers, could be identified, let alone have the £70 million (minimum) to replace just the first three mentioned. We therefore had a young and transitional squad that would need a good start to really challenge for the EPL.
- Adjusting to the new stadium.
- A number of important players injured or knackered in the World Cup.
- The Cashley Cole affair was still rumbling on. When that was settled he was gone and we had 3 new players, who had not had proper pre-seasons.
- The loss Reyes was not planned so there was no replacement ready.
It is fair to say that our main rivals would have some of these difficulties, but not all of them. So my expectation was that we were unlikely to challenge for the title, top 2 could be possible, top 4 would still be good, but a few places lower was a distinct fear. It has turned out that all the above problems have had a major impact on the season.
We were slow to adjust to the stadium and the points dropped against Villa and M’boro knocked that all important confidence and started the amazing run of conceding the first goal from the oppositions’ often only attempt on target. I reckon, at the Emirates, we conceded the first goal on no fewer than 13 occasions. That may be a record or not but the fact that we only lost 1 of those games surely must be. Now, of course, we should never have conceded the first goal, so often, but the fact that the spirit was there to fight back on 12 out of 13 occasions is a real positive. The 13th, by all accounts (West Ham was the first home game I have missed in about 16 years), was a complete travesty of justice.
The season breaks down to:
- Mainly very good overall possession and quality of play.
- Poor conversion of chances created.
- Too many goals conceded through poor team or individual concentration
- Mainly good to very good performances against the best and better teams. Liverpool, 1-4 at Anfield, being the only real exception.
- Too many underperformances against the poorer teams
- The FA & Carling Cup wins, at Anfield, probably cost us at least a further round in the CL. Even so I would not have swapped because I enjoyed our young sides’ performances in the CC and the Final was a glimpse into a future that I really like. We were not equipped to win the CL without TH14 or RVP anyway.
I was going to make a few more points but it appears that Arsene Wenger has already made them in a recent interview:
Our conversion rate is not the best in the league. It is mid-table…Our aggressiveness is a little bit lower than the others. We hear about the number of fouls, which is much lower. The number of tackles we made is much lower and that is linked with the conversion rate as well. On the other hand we have shown qualities that nobody else has shown. We are the only team that has scored 21 goals in the last 15 minutes. We have a mental strength and a technical quality that can really be predominant. If you make a table of the top four we are top. If you make a table of the top 10 we are second, three points behind Man Utd. If you make a table of the top 20 we are 25 points behind the leader. It means we have lost the points against the second part of the table
What we have lacked is a quick start and enough tempo, specially against the poorer teams. We have only scored in the 1st half, in PL games at The Emirates, in 8 games out of 19. A good tempo is what upsets the opposition but in some games the impression was that just not enough respect was being shown. They were not approching every game as if they were playing Man U or Chelsea. This is very dangerous because even the worst teams have a lot of quality players.
We have also lacked that physical aggression that AW talks about. There has not been a player capable of being really “nasty” since Martin Keown. Kolo is the only one with the obvious physique and strength but he will never be a vicious b’std. Diaby has a way to go, on this front, he is not a PV4 for me, certainly not yet anyway. Denilson likes a tackle but you would not expect him to do a Cesc and be a regular next season. Unless a purchase is made it will have to be more a collective team aggression. Eboue is one who will certainly need to harden up. You must not show weakness like he does.
Overall, to the shock of many, I believe a lot of progress has been made. This season has been no disaster, far from it. In spite of some bloggers saying we cannot score goals, we somehow managed 63 of them, which is only 2 short of Chelsea’s total. At the Emirates we regulars know a hell of a lot of chances went begging but our 43 goals was just 3 less than Man U at Old Trafford.
Yes I am as biased as hell, but there were very few occasions when we weren’t the better side, even when we hadn’t played particularly well. Only Liverpool gave us a real savaging and even in that game it was a matter of them catching us after the PSV debacle. Of course there have been poor performances but it should be remembered that often the difference between champians and challengers is the ability to get results when not playing very well.
There seems to be an attitude on some blogs that virtually anybody, who has had a decent game for someone, will be better than what we have got. I am perhaps overloyal to our players but we now have the finest group of young players I have seen in 50 years of supporting Arsenal. Seeing young players come through is an Arsenal tradition and usually, in time, a winning one. Man U couldn’t buy a title in 26 years of trying. It is never as simple as that even in this day of the instant. Winning titles is not a divine right but a privilege. The more histrionic amongst us should remember that. Whether we sign anyone or not I am convinced that provided that Arsene stays the future is very bright indeed. I do however think there will be a couple of decent signings in the summer.
Next season may even provide more of the same but let us believe that we can make the step that the 2000/2001 side (63 goals for; 38 against; 70 points) made the following season. We must hope for better luck with injuries and that the young players will have learnt from the experience they have gained, a full squad prepared by the pre-season and a stable defence.
Off the pitch I hope that Arsenal can continue to be as it always has been. I hate the class system but Arsenal has been extremely well run by the current board. To want to throw that away in some wish that we will buy £50m players, is just plain daft. We would be as hated as much as Chelsea and end up with impossible debt. I am not against progress or even foreign investment but the heart of Arsenal must remain where it always has been. The tradition must be maintained. Thanks to David Dein for all he has done for us. Let’s hope that some kissing and making up can be put on the agenda.
Enjoy the summer Gooners all!!

An excellent article, thanks!
It’s so refreshing to see some stuff that is not of the same headless chicken variety that seems to permeate the web these days.
Somehow we have descended into a culture where all questions are answered with sound bites and slogans, with no thought or analysis to back it up.
For example, the number of “fans” who seem incapable of understanding the difference between the Chelsea model and those of other investors and the vastly different implications of that on purchases is mind-boggling.
Having experienced the barren years, and also the George Graham era (of which I was not a fan), I have the impression that too many fans who have only seen the Wenger era are incapable of understanding just what it all represents, and are incapable of exercising the key element required, namely patience.
This is a great blog, and it’s very great to find this small haven of people with common sense amidst the tabloid rubbish being regurgitated elsewhere.

Cheers!
That’s the talk of a true Arsenal fan – I agree wholeheartedly!
Let us get the regular goalscorers back, and we will be right up there next season.

Well said Flint. These disloyal, unknowldegable, fairweather gooners are beginning to really piss me off!
Arsene is the greatest manager we have ever had and without question has still got it. My belief is the editors of these blogs need to stop pandering to them and start educating the numbskulls! Everyones got a right to a voice but these thick comedians are becoming far too loud!

Well said Flint agree entirely. Hannis your right i only hope Arsene replaces Reyes (obviously not returning) with a goalscoring winger which will give us that other option we need. Roll on August!

Brilliant Flint! I totally agree. I just wish a few more so called supporters could take a step-back and assess the situation realistically. I hate to hear people calling our players sh*t etc As long as they are playing for Arsenal they should be supported and encouraged. Young players cannot develop if their every mistake is pounced on or met with boos! Given all our problems this season a comfortable 4th place is nothing to be ashamed of.

Thank you GOD an Arsenal blog not populated by a bunch of whinging tossers. Iv read bloggers calling for Wenger to be sacked, saying Hleb is shit and must be sold and generaly blathering on about how we need a whole new team. Hell I even read one that said that the last two seasons have been crap! We got to the final of the CL last year for Gods sake with a lot of the present team involved in this triumph! I was getting seriously pissed. The stats dnt lie we are all lucky to be Arsenal supporters and to have Wenger as our manager, once again thank you!

well it def sounds optimistic…future is bright but im worried if we dont win cups we mgt loose big names …may be chelski winning makes it harder to take…but hai aw knowes much better than me and i tend to agree with him.
yes he aint going to sign a eto or torres ..but surely sum quality players like R Babel or saviola could be signed for relatively low prices.
lets just hope future is red and white of arsenal

Flint…as one who can remember your partner McGill, not to mention Fothers in the middle (imagine those three in the back line today!)…I can only agree 100%.
The young ‘uns don’t know how well off we are. We have and are still, despite a “disappointing season”, been spoilt rotten over the past 18 years. Long may it continue.

My congratulations on a sober and realistic assessment of the season Flint.
It is nice to hear a favourable assessment of the youngsters from one whose perspective spans fifty years.
Arsenal’s position in the Top-Four and Top-Ten slices of the table, and the statistics highlighting the goals in the last sixth of the game after frequently conceding first, make one thing clear: This team is not lacking in character. That is reassuring.
Hopefully the travails of this season has brought them closer together as a unit. With the inevitable maturation in time, and better luck on the injury front, this is a team that can be awesome. One that can beat the best and do it in style, playing the kind of football Wenger has spoilt us with.
Wenger, in my opinion, has to buy and buy well this summer.
My minimum ‘wish’ list: Micah Richards, Anelka/Trezeguet, and maybe one quality Centreback.
Samuel Eto? Given, what I think we’ll be asked for him, I think Trezeguet will be better value. Anelka, on the other hand, will represent an “educated” gamble in my opinion.
My sell list: Hleb, Senderos, Ljungberg.
We’ll see.

Totally agree with you analysis. We will see a team creating a lot next season, but for sure we will be converting a lot more. Hopefully Henry will come back as the top scorer of the Premier League.

Flint? McGill?
Who are you referring to McCulloch? Our old FB from way back when I was a nipper?
Sigh.. the team had some characters then.. Skirton, Baker, Neill.. Mcleod.. Happy memories.
Overall an excellent article. This has been a good year givcen the injuries we face. Our youth showed we have promise though we probably need a seasoned pro or two to help with transition. My biggest disappointment was the way people turned on Senderos..he has everything except confidence at the moment. He will be huge for us given time.
I have been watching Arsenal since 1962 ..sometimes they have really p****d me off.. but never once have I booed an Arsenal player. I have no time for any so called fans who boo their own.

I wonder how quick Alan Skirton is these days? He’s your goal scoring winger Veteran. Are you allowed to play with a zimmer frame?
Ted Magill, Billy McCullough with Jim Fotheringham- now that WOULD BE a defence to whinge about. Jim had the turning circle of a Routemaster bus.

Brilliant article Flint! Something ” Gooner for 60 years” wrote made me want to leave something. I truly have been “spoilt rotten over the past 18 years”. That glorious day in May 18 years ago marked my birth as a gooner. Hence I’m only a nipper. However looking through our glorious history, the two 18 year periods prior to 1989 yielded only 2 league titles. Wonder how many gooners would still be around. Winning things is truly a priviledge, not a right. Take a look at this excellent site http://krysstal.com/football/display_leaguehistory.php?clubname=Arsenal
This is the second most successful period in our club’s history, bettered only by the Chapman Era and the thirties that was interrupted by the war. I wish we had done much better this season, but on hindsight it’s seasons like this that prove who the real fans are. I do hope we have another 18 years like this or better. But if we don’t and they prove to be like the ones before or worse, it will be absolutely gut-wrenching, but I will still be proud to say the name!
Great article, great comments! Come on you Reds!!

Thank Christ for an Arsenal blog, that see’s the bigger picture!
All these silly little kids, demanding trophies & “the win, by any cost” makes me sick… although, I don’t think it’s exclusively with our club…
The emergence of Sky & the tabloids, generate a pathetic “win or you are in crises” atmosphere and it’s horrible to watch!
Now recently, blog’s are place where you can get your view across! Most are pathetic little nerd’s sits on his PC all day, wanking with 1 hand & typing verbal masturbation with the other! All these “views” you read on our team, are probably from little cunts who have never been to a game in their life.
I just hope Wenger n’ the lads, never check out newsnow and see the shite these little mugs, spout!
I’ve got a great feeling about next season people!
LET’S ALL KEEP THE FAITH AND GET BEHIND THE TEAM…
LIKE REAL “SUPPORTERS” DO!!!
UP THE ARSE…!

I didn’t see much of the Fulham away & that was reported as pretty bad. Bolton was a game in which we came back quite well & perhaps almost deserving a point in the end.
The fact that we are struggling to find games where we were outplayed rather makes my point?
