Say Hello, Wave Goodbye

First of all, I’d like to apologise for the cock-up yesterday with Comments that meant they all had to be moderated. Sorry but the rate of Spam has picked up something chronic – if you want to know where to buy viagra or some derivative or some hardcore porn sites, let me know as there’s been over 20,000 of the buggers stopped from peddling their wares here. I had changed the settings and kind of forgot to change them back. But then you knew already that I was technologically – challenged…

Arsene Wenger has been telling the World that he is a failure, responsible for the ‘worst season‘ under his tenure. OK, Le Boss, that’s fine by me. Seriously, if he feels that he is a failure for not getting the team to challenge for the Premiership then so be it. The realistic amongst us never expected it, merely an improvement on last season. However, that he expected a challenge is indicative of his ‘winning’ mentality yet it also explains why he has shown the pressure in the campaign, tantrums with officials and managers and generally looking stressed out. That he has a busy summer ahead will not help that but Dear God man, take some time off, recharge your batteries and get it into perspective. It is next season that I expect a title tilt to happen. Don’t forget there are more important things than football in life. By which time, you’ll have met with Real Madrid, become their new manager, which is what the cheap headlines want people to think before realising that they refer to trying to sort out the Reyes / Baptista mess.

On the subject of which, I cannot see how that is possible in a neat, clean way. It is fairly obvious that Reyes won’t come back, despite AW saying he would welcome him. Which leaves Baptista. Personally, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, take him on loan again if you want him at the Club. Mark this first season down as experience and then next season, see if he can cut the mustard in the Premiership. Don’t buy him. There is too much risk involved. Whilst you can see that he does have quality, there is no shame for him in not setting the division alight in his first season. The foolishness would be to ignore how he has struggled with the team’s style of play and adapting to it, to sign him permanently. OK if Madrid accept £3m then maybe signing him would not be too bad but make sure that he is settled off of the pitch which must be one of the reasons for struggling to make an impact on it. Make sure that aspect is sorted before anything else.

Ken Friar has once more stepped up to the plate for the Club. Thinking back to how long he has been there, a sneaking suspicion arises in my mind that he is some sort of Time Lord as the last time I heard mention of anything, he had been at the Club for half a century. Whilst AW needs the help, there he is stepping ‘Once more unto the breach‘ and providing the stability that AW needs right now or as he puts it,

It is difficult to find somebody now who is in between the board and me and is in the right position. When I work with Ken Friar I know I speak to the board. I say ‘okay let’s do it and let’s finish it with the lawyers’ and he does that. If we have someone in between the board and me he needs then to report to me again and then the board so it becomes a little bit complicated. The way to work until now was always directly me and the board and I have to find a way to get around that. That is not easy at the moment

Wenger also admits that this is possibly going on post July 1st which to me says that the Club do not need a traditional Director of Football (nor does AW want that – after all, that is his job when he decides to step down), more someone who can conduct a contract negotiation.

Fabrice Muamba appears to be heading for regular first team football in The Premiership next season although it will be at Brum City to keep Sebastian Larsson company. It was rumoured that Reading were interested but unsurprisingly the player is staying put. I am not concerned with his departure – he never arrived at the Club in truth – as we are well stocked with central midfielders and he would need to be exceptional to depose Diaby and Gilberto from that role. With him going though, it is a sure indication that Le Boss has no intention of letting the Brazilian trot off with some Old Italian Lady. And it adds another couple of million to AW’s transfer kitty. Indeed, with the costs of Fabianski and the youngster at Bolton who is reportedly signing for the Club, this money will mean Arsene has spent a big fat round zero of the 2007 – 08 Transfer Budget.

Graham Poll is reported to be retiring at the end of this season with Sunday supposedly his last Premiership match. Arsene apparently likes him. Well, that makes him in a minority of one. Poll was an underrated visionary in his career, culminating at Germany 2006 with a brave new disciplinary system and at Ewood Park 2007 by only looking at the top half of player’s bodies and missing stonewall penalties. He has cited abuse he gets from managers, players and supporters alike as his reason for considering retiring. Well, if you hadn’t been such a useless Git, we wouldn’t be screaming at you. Please do not take this as a personal criticism but when the FA present you with your Golden Whistle, kindly accept by bending over so that it can be rammed firmly up your rectum.

  1. hi, made this comment yesterday but guess it came too late. Regarding tomorrows game, I think there is a real chance that Bendtner could be involved, I think I would prob start him. Adebayor is injured, as is every other striker at the club other than Baptista. Can you imagine, perhaps on form alone, a more incompetent partnership than Freddie and Baptista, as suggested by AW yesterday?? Bendtner is back at the club now after his loan…Bring on Bendtner I say!

As for Baptista, lets face it, he is totally wrong for our current side. He thrives on balls into the box; remember AW praising his “ability to time runs…” etc?? With no wingers it is no surprise he has struggled; the only time he has had service from a pacey wideish player was Carling Cup, Liverpool away, from Ali-Oh-dear. If you want to keep Baptista it should only be done in combination with a Ribery and/or a Babel joining the club too: which of course, would be no bad thing at all, especially given the real need for pace in our side…

I doubt Bendtner will be involved – I think he only came back on Thursday so one training session with the team is probably not enough for him to take part in a match. Even if he does, statistics alone show that he will not strike fear into the Pompey defence with no Premiership goals this season….

As for width, well, we will see if he signs anyone. With everyone fit in the forward line, my guess is that RvP will be dropping on the right as he does with Holland. Whether AW will go for an all out 4-3-3, I don’t know.

  3. Dont you use Aksimet to fetch comment-spam?

  4. I do use Akismet and had fannied around with one the settings in that which was too stringent to be workable.

Decided that it was wrong, got distracted and forgot to change it back.

  5. Im not saying that Bendtner is perfect but how much has freddie trained in the last week?? As for him not scoring any premiership goals this season, he hasnt played in the premiership!

I was just saying that Bendtner is a better option than freddie thats all…I think he’ll at least be on the bench.

As for 4-3-3 – Holland play that with robben one side and a real poacher in the middle: we have neither the pace of robben or a poacher to make it work…

  6. I doubt that Bentner is eligible to play but not sure.

Jeremie Aliadiere was/is a very promising player who, thus far, has had his career wrecked by injuries. There are enough non Arsenal supporters out there to call our players’ silly names, so it would be better if our’s didn’t.

  7. We hope that Wenger is not seriously thinking of signing Baptista either permanently or on loan. He is not up to it as we all can see and because his presence will affect the progress of other forwards like Bentdner for example.

The reason that Muamba was sold on is Song’s performances for Charlton which in the games we have seen have been of high quality. Plus the 2 m!

  8. “I doubt that Bentner is eligible to play but not sure”

    simply: he is eligible

“Jeremie Aliadiere was/is a very promising player who, thus far, has had his career wrecked by injuries. There are enough non Arsenal supporters out there to call our players’ silly names, so it would be better if our’s didn’t.”

I think I am allowed to call players what I bloody well like – it is more affectionate than mocking in any case. I dont think the player in quesiton is really in need of charity I am sure he is made more than enough by way of compensation through his unjury hit career…

  9. Byron

    “simply: he is eligible”

Is he? We assume he is because he is an Arsenal player yet Football’s Regulations are quite often not that simple. Something as daft as returning outside of the transfer window or his loan contract stipulating ‘the end of the season’ could upset this. Has his loan officially finished? Practically it has because Brum are up but what about the contract?

As for 4-3-3, I think you might find that Henry on the left, Adebayor in the middle, RvP on the right may well give you the pace and goals. Remember, none of them hold rigidly to any position for the Dutch or Arsenal so when one drops back into midfield, players move into their position to compensate for this.

  10. Of course you are Byron, just as I am allowed to object to it.

Glad you are such a compassionate chap.

Where did you see Bentner is eligible to play?

  11. I am not sure on Bendtner

Didn’t Scott Sinclair return to Chelsea and play after being on loan?

I can’t see Wenger picking him, although If he is elliglbe why not put him on the bench (which has vacancies, given the bench against Chelsea) i reckon it would really lift his spirits going into the close season, and if the if it is decided that the Beast is off back to Madrid whats the point of playing him (Its not like he will score anyway!!!)

Oh and very happy that Poll is hanging up his over-used whistle, I was listening to Wrighty on Talk Sport last night and he was trying to remember the bad games he has had, how about the Fa Cup replay against Blackburn where he failed to give us two obvious penalties and left two thugs on the pitch after a string of bad challenges. I say a good referee is one that if asked ‘who reffed yesterday? ‘ you would not know the answer, with Poll I always felt that he thought 60,000 people had paid to watch him for 90 mins, and his admission that he now wants to move into entertainment sums that up.

  12. As we have argued in our preview Bentdner should start tomorow. He has been given a 4 year contract and if this is not the best time to start blooding him in then when is it?

  13. Great post today YW – I agree with you that maybe Wenger needs a little break from football to help him see things a bit clearer, but he is so driven to succeed I can’t really see it happening. He’s also got the added complication of having to find a negotiator for all these big name transfers some are expecting us to make this summer. I bet it won’t feel like an 8 week break to Le Boss!
