I get a queasy feeling in me whenever I read of anything that Peter Hill-Wood has said to the media, before I’ve even seen the words. And no, it’s nothing to do with last night’s intake of Magner’s and dodgy curry, he is not an orator who inspires confidence, more inspiring a feeling that he has opened his mouth just to change his feet.
Firstly it seems that Ice Skunk are not too keen on meeting with him which is hardly surprising given the charm offensive he launched when Kroenke bought ITV’s shareholding,
I gave him some dates and he couldn’t make them…The ball’s in his court. I am very relaxed and will meet him whenever it is convenient
It might just be a long wait for PHW & Co. Kroenke might just get the feeling that whatever is said will be blurted out to the media within a couple of days of any meeting taking place which means the public pressure is all at his feet to launch a takeover, something that he may not quite yet be ready to do.
The Chairman also said,
We have got funds available, but Arsene is not a buyer of players just for the sake of it. So far Arsene hasn’t come up with any suggestions, which is good news and bad news
It is in itself an unremarkable statement until you get to the last sentence. Now consider this with the statements that were always made when DD was in charge of transfers, i.e. “we don’t talk about our targets in public until the deals are done“. The same outcome as in no-one is any the wiser about who is on AW’s list but without the nervousness that is now creeping into the support’s thoughts. So we need to consider why PHW thinks that this is ‘good news and bad news‘.
Firstly, I guess he thinks it is good news because Le Boss has complete faith in the squad at his disposal and that he is not rushing out to buy. It is also positive because you can interpret it as AW being focussed on the final matches of the season and not becoming distracted by other issues. He could also believe it is positive because there will be more funds available to meet the costs of the business. Finally, it could be that Le Boss is waiting to sort out Reyes and Baptista’s futures with Real Madrid so that he knows exactly how much he has to spend, those conversations supposedly taking place this week.
‘Bad News‘? Well, there are holes in the squad that need to be plugged. Generally speaking, most of us believe that two or three judicious signings would allow the squad to challenge for honours next season. If none are made, Lord Peter probably realises that supporters and the media are more likely to claim that it is the Board’s fault that signings were not made, either through the hole that DD has left or in the hacks case, no money available. Either way, such inactivity is a PR boost for Kroenke, even if he does nothing, with a groundswell of support for his supposed bid building amongst the smaller shareholders?
There is one final interpretation that can be put on the statement. It is ‘good news‘ because it means that the dodderer cannot blurt it out as he seems to when speaking to the Press whilst from his point of view, the ‘bad news‘ is that half way through the sentence, he has realised that no-one is telling him anything, he’s out of the loop on this, no-one trusts him to keep quiet. One thing is certain, his foray into public speaking has achieved nothing but discomfort so perhaps someone could have a word in his shell-like and tell him that sometimes, just sometimes, it is better to say nothing rather than anything. Especially since his pronouncements tend to make you lose a little bit more confidence in what the Board are actually doing.
So Lord Peter, if by some chance reading this, I consider it my duty to keep you up to date with the comings and goings that AW is not telling you about. And most of them are rehashes of old stories: Gilberto is apparently off to Juventus, allowing Abou Diaby to form the central midfield partnership with Fabregas that most of us think will keep the team on solid ground in years to come. Except if the Brazilian does go, it will be sooner than most of us expected. Ryan Babbel has emerged as the most likely target to fill the wide berth or another striking role at the club. That’s going to cost you £6m, Guv’nor, because he apparently has a release clause in his contract that says that is how much he will cost if that nice Arsenal club come knocking. Which is about £10m cheaper than Franck Ribery who has yet to decide if he is leaving Marseilles as all he wants is Champions League football, something that may be achieved with his current club. If he does go though, you’ll be pleased to know that he aims high with his chosen destinations including a spell at either Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Milan or Real Madrid. See, despite going out in the Second Round, the Club still has a high profile. However, Ribery is no shoo-in as Florent Malouda is coming up on the rails as a lot of peoples choice for a wide role at the Club. If you haven’t had enough of dodgy defending from Emmanuel Eboue this season and want another risky Right Back on show, Pascal Chimbonda has said that he’d love to play for Arsenal. You know him, the one who handed a transfer request in at Wigan before the last game at Highbury, quite possibly on the way out to the pitch if reports are to be believed.
Much about Eboue was explained at the weekend when Kolo Toure told the World, well Soccer AM, that Manu was not the brightest bulb in the box although he has a great sense of humour and dances like no other at the Club. So next time you see him charging down the wing with the ball at his feet, it isn’t his attacking instincts coming to the fore unfortunately. No, its more a case of ‘My God, what is this at my feet? I’d better run like hell away from it. Aaaargh! It’s following me. Help! Help!‘.
‘Til tomorrow.

The funny thing about PHW is that we’ve always had this impression of a guy a little bit out of the loop and not quite in tune with the rest of the club.
However, when he was interviewed by Arseblog, he came across as a very reasonable and well-spoken individual. Personally, he completely reversed my previous opinion of him.
Could this possibly be another example of those tw@ts in the media leading us all on a merry dance?
Many Gooners still buy that line of Anelka being “le sulk”, when in fact he was welcomed back to Highbury by his former team mates, including none other than Big Tone himself, which hardly gels with the impression everyone was fed of him being disruptive in the dressing room.
It’s hard to decipher exactly what Danny Fizsman was saying about it the other day in that interview (not least of all because the first part on ATVO had been chopped off), but he seemd to say something about PHW being quoted on things he hadn’t actually said.
Either he was covering up PHW’s extraordinary lack of diplomacy, or maybe some ballbag in the media had once again twisted and invented something (now that would be a first, wouldn’t it?).
Even so, I can’t see AW being too open about what or who he wants anyway.
He definitely hinted at some action in the last interview.
He said that he thought that the squad, when all fit, didn’t lack anything, but he immediately followed that up by saying that despite that, he had to look at the fact that we are still so many points behind manu, so I think he is not just sitting there with his thumb up his @rse as so many doomsayers are wont to moan.
We only need one or two tweaks, and there do appear to be a few players likely to leave (contrary to popular belief, we do have a very large squad).
I think this off-season could be quite interesting, not only from all the drivel churned out by the clueless media ballbags, but also because I think AW is looking for those one or two tweaks.

I think Wenger wants a real winger. Either Reyes comes back or he will buy one.
Other then that, my guess he wont do much as it will hamper the development of his kids. We will be much stronger next season anyway with key players back and really good pre-season preparations.
I really look forward to next season and I think we will do great.

The kids will get better for the season they have had. But still Wenger needs to enter the market and buy two experienced players.
Another forward is needed and a wide midfielder. Both have to be quality experienced players who will not need permission from their parents to appear in evening kick off games!
There is a need to recruit another proven goal scorer to create enough of a cover and competition between players. We have advocated that Nikolas Anelka would be ideal and is now available.
There is also a shortfall in the wide midfield position. The absence of Reyes, Hleb’s known deficiencies, Walcott’s inexperience and Ljumberg’s ageing mean that Arsenal have to recruit a pacy winger to compliment Walcott’s inexperience.
A lot of other sites are panicking saying we need recruitment otherwise….
But there are a lot of other things that Arsenal need to get right if they are to challenge for next season!
Not only buying players.

You are so right RBS has a big mouth even Fitzman said he was misquoted when he made the comment about those people. The board will have to negotaite with DD and Kroenke if they want to keep wenger, henry and cesc. Wengers comments today that title hope do not depend on new signings is really garbage.

Tinuke ain’t a bird, much…
It’s good to hear people, seeing the big picture on here…
Wenger knows the kids will become something great, and considering everything the man has done for our beloved club, no body should be questioning him…
It makes you sick, going onto other blogs (mainly gunnerblog) and reading pathetic little kids banging on about how we’re a spent force & we need kaka, eto’o, ronaldinho…etc, to make us a great side again! FUCK OFF!!!
These are the same little muppets, who 5 years ago, probably supported man yoo! At least the wankers can go back to supporting them now though… so at least that’s one good thing, to come out of not winning anything this year….
Don’t get me wrong… winning nothing again this year, has depressed me, to the up most, but if certain people can’t see beyond the “win now, or else…” mentality, then please FUCK OFF & SUPPORT CHELSEA OR MAN YOO!
Phew! Rant over! ha ha!
UP THE ARSE…

Flint,
Just had a quick butchers in the comment section on East Lower… JESUS CHRIST!!!
I’ve never heard (well, technically read…) so much whiney little bitches…
There’s nothing wrong with constrictive criticism, and if we are in the same position we are now, next season, then maybe we should start asking Wenger some questions… but the way those mugs are going on, in there, it’s Armageddon!
“The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse is near….”
I tend to get the feeling, that a lot of this people think we have a divine RIGHT to win something, every year…
But wake the fuck up people… that never happens! Team’s come & go! Everyone has their moment…
Wenger has had 2 lots, of massive success (97-98 & 2002-2005) on a limited budget, but has always came back with a new fresh team!
Can any of these people not see the signs, that we are not that far off, another awesome team?
Unbeaten against Chelsea! Done the double over Man Yoo! Lost to Liverpool away in the league, granted! But what about the other 3 occasion we’ve played Liverpool, this year?
The foundations are there, and I feel just a couple of tweaks here n’ there… and you will all be licking Wenger’s arse again, along with the media…!
WENGER KNOWS…! TRUST ME!!!

What is the problem in asking questions this year than waiting for another poor season to ask the same questions that needed to be addressed now. At the end of last season our worst for 9 years, we lost a whole host of experianced great players and did not not adequately replace them. Here we are at the end of an even worse season and the noises coming from Wenger about his plans for the future are even less encouraging than last year. Knowing that he has only one year left on his contract and will not commit to more, how can we expect top players to sign for us and how do we know that he will not just see out this year hoping for the best with the current squad he “built” which I think is fair to say everyone agrees is not good enough to compete at the highest level. I think he needs to come out and be very specific about what he is looking for (not names of players) and give the fans some belief that in fact “arsene does know” because he has clearly taken us backwards in the past few years.

Dan,
There’s nothing wrong with criticism & asking questions of Wenger, but some of the comments I’ve seen recently, are border line on pathetic!
“Sack Wenger! Henry’s past it! Dein’s gone, so Arsenal will fall apart… ”
ALL STUPID KNEE JERK REACTIONS!
People need to stop reading The Sun, and taking their shit cunt views onboard!
Yeah, last season, domestically, we were poor, but doesn’t anyone seem to remember a little trip to Paris?
17 minutes away from European Champs…! If we had held out, would these “supporters” be calling for Wenger’s head now?
Ok, this season has been mega frustrating! Wenger’s worst season, by far, since he’s been with us, but haven’t you seen enough glimpses from this current team, to warrant a bit of positivity?
Man Yoo home & away?
Blackburn at home?
Chelsea away, whilst down to the bare bones?
Spurs home & away in the Carling Cup?
Liverpool in the F.A. & Carling Cups?
All I’m saying, is don’t slate the manager, who’s done so much for our club yet!
In the build up to the Unbeaten season, anyone remember who we bought in the summer? Just Lehmann… and look what they went on to achieve?
Who’s to say, that if come flying out of the traps, in August with RVP, Henry, Rosicky, Ade & Bendtner banging in goals for fun, we can’t achieve something similar?
Yeah, maybe my eyes are red tinted! Maybe I’m guilty of being too positive… but that doesn’t mean that people who are going totally the other way are right…!
KEEP THE FAITH!!!

I think you have it right, Clockend. At one point in the season we had no less than 7 defenders out for several games. RvP was looking better and better before his injury and was set to challenge for Premiership top goal scorer. Up to the Carling Cup final half the footballing world were marvelling at the young talent that Wenger had nurtured…that has not changed and the youngsters are one season more experienced now. In my opinion the extended pre-season will allow Wenger and the squad to work and train together thoroughly for the first time, and they will then kick on next season.
My major concern….the faithlessness of some of our fans. The f****** who leave early, the f****** who don’t use their season tickets. Hopefully next season the new facility to sell on a ticket if you can’t make the game will help.
And let’s sing the bloody roof off next season.

Go to it Frank & CEG,
AW clearly knows nothing about anything. What sort of idiot is it that keeps us in the top 2 for 8 consecutive season & THEN expects us accept 2 4th places in a row, with only a CL Final as a sweetener?
It is daft to build a squad, which it “is fair to say everyone agrees is not good enough to compete at the highest level”, even though it beat the Champions twice, was unbeaten against Chelsea, was evens with Liverpool, & good god last season beat those paupers Real Madrid & Juventus.
Surely it is much better to bankrupt the club by spending £ for £ with Chelsea?
By: Flint McCullough on May 9, 2007
at 5:06 pm
Dan, I disagree that ‘everyone knows this squad is not good enough’ to win the league. With everybody fully fit, this team has plenty of options, which Wenger has not had for the last few months. Why shouldn’t we give him another year to see if his first choice team, free of injuries can deliver?
No one enjoys ending the season empty handed, but it takes time to build a winning team. If we go for the wholesale changes some are advocating we will spend at least another year waiting for the new players to settle in. As for the young players needing time to develop – look at RVP. At the beginning of the season some were questioning his credentials, but his potential had started to pay off before he was struck by injury. I also see people crying out for more experience and then suggesting we get rid of Henry, Gallas, Lehman, Ljunberg and Gilberto – hello! Where’s the logic in that?
I’m sure Wenger will surprise us with some changes, but only a fool would advertise what his plans are. If he says we’re looking for a player for such a position, what do you think will happen to the price of every player available to fill that position? Look at how Chelsea bought SWP just to stop us buying him?
