Stan, Cesc, Jens, Liz – The Usual Suspects But Hasselhoff?????

With a move being interpreted as the first stage of a collapse of the determination to keep Ice Skunk at bay, The Daily Mirror reports that Keith Edelman is to meet with ‘Silent’ Stan to find out about his reported takeover of the Club. Given the source of the story, it has to be taken with a pinch of salt but it would be nice to think that they are actually trying to make contact with him to avoid a twelve month period of speculation and uncertainty. Yesterday’s trading in the shares was certainly small fry, around 14 when I last looked but no guesses as to who is believed to be the buyer. Only another 24,000 to go then. If you want some pompous opinion on the ‘Arsenal Affair‘, read this piece by James Lawton in The Independent. Whilst knowing what Lawton looks like, I still picture him mentally as the Spitting Image puppet of Kenneth Baker. Ask your mum and dad about it if you have no idea what the hell I’m blathering on about.

Dein’s replacement will not be Daniel Commolli if his comments yesterday are anything to go by. Following on from Robbie Keane’s assertion that Tottenham are really a good team and almost Arsenal’s equals, it seems that there is a huge outburst of denial taking place at WHL. Personally, I cannot see anything happening on the ‘Director of Football’ until post the season’s end unless Arsene is going to just appoint someone and get them in on the nod from the Board. Otherwise, it strikes me that there will have to be meetings about the role and compensation to current employers – unless AW’s gift of spotting unrecognised talent extends to off the pitch as well – all of which takes time to sort out. How many of our media targets will have escaped the transfer net in that timescale?

Cesc Fabregas is ‘interviewed’ in The Sun this morning. It is the usual mature stuff from him but also revealing that he turned down Madrid because

The club said I was not for sale and that was very important because it showed Arene Wenger had a lot of trust in me…Therefore he is a big reason why I stayed

Given that he has been the most consistent performer this season – surely a shoe-in for the Club’s Player of the Year award? – he cannot really be expecting Arsene to show anything other than complete faith in his abilities. Fabregas is magnanimous is coming a runner-up to Ronaldo in the PFA Young Player of the Year awards,

Ronaldo is perhaps the best player in the world…I’m honoured to finish just behind him…He has been exceptional this season and played a big role in helping Manchester United fight for honours

It is stretching the imagination to believe that others in the squad would be so complimentary – step forward Mr Gallas – and it is surely only a matter of time before the Fabregas mantelpiece is bowing under the strain of the rewards that he deserves?

Jens Lehmann has apparently tested Arsene’s patience with his antics at the corner that led to Keane’s opener on Saturday. He stopped short of giving him a final warning but it is unusual for Le Boss to be openly critical but then he did defend him as well. With Mourinho slating Referees – will that be enough for him to have to visit FA HQ? Probably not – there is a tendency to use them as the soft target. Whilst I do not think that the Officials are overtly biased against or for some players, Lehmann cannot be doing himself any favours as I am sure that they all watch MotD or Goals on Sunday and can see that 90% of the time he is making a fuss over nothing. It is time for the antics to stop and for him to concentrate on the matter in hand because more than anything else, he must be losing concentration himself.

News that Liz and her mum have been ‘outed’ as Gooners comes at the worst possible time, given the American’s fascination with our Royal Family. Talk about the ultimate ‘jumping on the bandwagon’. Call themselves Supporters? Where were they at York in 1985? Nowhere. Sitting comfortably at home, I should think, not standing freezing their wotsits off, cursing the early arrivers who helped clear the pitch as Shirley Williams gave away a penalty for another dreadful Cup defeat. Mind you, it would explain why the Corporate Seats do not refill after the half-time interval, with all the lackey’s waiting for the toilet seats to be changed after Liz had used them. Apparently, and this is true, once she done the business, the seats are whipped off to avoid anyone selling them to Royal souvenir hunters. It beggars belief…’and this is the toilet seat that Liz used in Ulan Bator in 1972. Actually, there’s a really funny story about this one…

According to Dallas Mavericks Star Dirk Nowitzki, he concentrates on the accuracy of shooting his foul shots by quietly singing Looking for Freedom, supposedly a hit for David Hasselhoff. Perhaps the Arsenal forwards should do the same when thinking about shooting at goal? Although that may not be so good, nightmares abounding at the thought of The Hoff in his leather jacket singing psuedo-soft rock is enough to make anyone miss and we are good enough at that already.

Yeah, it’s a slow news day.

  1. a little surreal today Yogi!

  2. Arsenal need more investment in the team. They also need to run the business efficiently and the Americans know very well how to do it. Especially with regard to marketing the brand in the home and equally importantly the international markets.

However if the takeover is highly leveraged (i.e a large proportion of the buying consideration is financed from borrowings rather than from own capital) then there is the danger that the club’s revenues will be used to pay the loan installments.

This is where the Board will have to draw the red line and negotiate a deal where this is not allowed to happen.

  3. > … then there is the danger that the club’s revenues will be used to
    > pay the loan installments

You can bet your house; come to think of it, you can bet eveything that you have that “club’s revenue will be used to pay the loan installments”.

Where else si that money coming from? Kroenke’s own pocket?

  4. Good articles, long but well worth your time while we’re wondering what all this takeover buzz is all about:

The ManU fans were seemingly right in trying to fight against the takeover. But now the Scousers don’t seem to know what might be on the cards. Let’s be smarter than that and keep our heads clear.

  5. Great stuff Louisa, specially the 1st one.

I cannot believe that we want to be saddled with more debt.
Perhaps that wouldn’t be the case but it must be odds on.

Loads of Gooners seem to want the quick short term fix- even though in my opinion nothing ain’t broke. Far from it in fact.

  6. Flint – I think the short-term fixers think Kroenke is going to invest shed loads of money for player purchases. I don’t believe that for one second, neither do I think Wenger would want that. He is on the verge of the team he built from scratch achieving great things. What they need is consistency and maturity to add to the undoubted quality that is already there. Wholesale changes to the team would involve another year of transition while the new players gel, plus setting back the development of the promising young players we have. I’m willing to wait for success. Money and big name signings is no guarantee of success. The bond I feel for this team is stronger than any I would feel for a bunch of mercenaries who would be off at the first sign of a better offer.

  7. Exactly Passenal.

I can only imagine those who want the takeover would have been happy going to Wembley instead of AG.

Nothing against Americans but they would have thought Wembley was walking distance, whilst we know different.

We have or had something special throughout our club & nothing brought it home more than the last match at Highbury against Wigan followed by the CL Final.

We are on the verge of having one of our greatest ever teams & all done from our own recources. Something to be really proud of.

Why do we want to so keenly throw this unique spirit away & for what?

  8. I am for the takeover, AND I am for Wenger and his young team. I am not concerned about investment in new players in the Summer as I don’t think we need any.

The reason I want this to happen quickly is to minimise disruption and to ensure that David Dein can be re-employed. He is the principal moderniser at the club. Please try to remember that his opposition to the building of the new stadium was 5 years ago and we do not know his reasons. He has been very much a part of the management team since that time. Please also remember that he not only brought in AW but also Fiszman and Edelman.

The key to this is that we have no choice. Fiszman is about to sell his shares but is haggling about time and price. In other words this is not necessarily a hostile takeover. Interesting that everyone is having a go at the potential buyer of the club and not the potential sellers.

If we are to have a new owner then I am very happy with Kroenke. PHW has proven recently that he is a buffoon – his remarks to a CURRENT partner in the press were an absolute disgrace. The other major shareholders are just privileged by-standers.

AS for the way in which Kroenke’s purchase will be funded …I don’t know and I don’t think anyone else does either. The shares he has bought so-far are from his own money.

He is an exciting character and has great ideas about making sport accessible, partnerships between clubs, dedicated TV channels, ticketing etc.

You can vote for yesterday’s people if you want but you are not required to vote and they will not be there.

  9. I admit I am a stick in the mud old diehard.

What I really want is just the football as it used to be only popular with those who loved it with passion & accepted that there were ups & downs.

I appreciate that with TV you can now watch almost any match live but appart from that I really hate the razamataz, punditry & all the other bollox that goes with our modern game.

Frank-What makes think Danny Fizman wants to sell anyway & would you be happy to accept more hugh debt being placed on the club.

Say what you like about the HWs & BCs but the Arsenal have always avoided the financial meltdowns that have crippled all of the major clubs, bar Liverpool, in my time.

History tells me football won’t always be as popular as it is now- what happens if the bubble starts to burst?

  10. Another point.

Isn’t the new stadium the prime example of modernisation in our time?

DD was great for the club & maybe still will be, but it seems he opposed that, wanting to go to Wembley.

It is interesting that George Graham, in his autobiography, said he thought DF would be a better chairman than DD.
