Creativity Counts For Nothing If There’s No End Product

Arsenal 0 – 1 West Ham United

0 – 1 Zamora (45)

Re-arrange this set of words to come up with a well-known phrase: ‘Arse’, ‘Banjo’, ‘A’, ‘Cannnot’, ‘Forwards’, ‘Arsenal’, ‘With’, ‘Cows’, ‘A’ and ‘Hit’.

Thirty shots on goal. No goals. Visitors have four shots on goal. One goal. There is something seriously wrong if the players cannot score a goal from such a large number of attempts on target. You can put whatever gloss on it that you like; their ‘keeper played well or you can make whatever excuses about injuries – and there is some merit in this argument – but at the end of the day, you cannot rely on two players for all of your goals. Midfielders, Defenders and Attackers all have, not should, have to score if a team is to be successful. And at the moment, the Arsenal players are relinquishing that responsibility.

Arsene commented yesterday that the Ice Skunk’s investment was not a takeover and that in five or six years time, the Club would not need anyone’s money because the internal resources, i.e. the youth policy, will enable them to compete as equals to others who have money to burn. If the players carry on at this rate then in five or six years time we will be celebrating getting into the InterToto Cup.

Right that is the knee-jerk reaction out of the way. Lets look at the game itself. First mistake – one forward. Why would you replace two strikers who are struggling to score with a midfielder whose last Premiership goal was pre-decimalisation? Those who claim that Freddie is a better support striker than Baptista or Aliadiere got their answer today. That is not to blame Freddie on his own for this loss; merely observation that the change in formation and personnel did nothing to alter the outcome. The second mistake was leaving Diaby on the bench. Goal at Villa, sterling work at Goodison, left wing at Anfield, bench today. Why? What on earth does the guy have to do to get a place in the centre. If AW was serious about a 4-5-1 formation, have the centre of the midfield buttoned down, two wide-men leaving your central midfielder to attack at will.

The positive from this afternoon is that the performance was considerably better by all accounts, than the one witnessed at Anfield last week. TV highlights are notoriously unreliable as a guide but I have to confess that listening to the game this afternoon, it was a relief to be destroying several outbuildings in Mi Suegra’s garden – an observation that the strike of the sledgehammer indicated pent-up anger and frustration was not too wide of the mark.

There were numerous chances; a dozen on target, nearly double that amount off. And therein lies the rub. It is unrealistic to expect every shot to be on target yet to have so many and not score is not just wasteful, it is careless. And for this, the players need to stand up and be counted. Once they get on the pitch, forget the bench; no-one there can direct their shots into the back of the net. We can make all the excuses in the World for them, ie recognising their talent, yet if they cannot put the ball into the net, their talent counts for nought.

The greatest concern though is for their confidence. With each game, the failure to score enough to win chips away at their mental reserves further. In those so young this is a difficult asset to regain control of. This is a time for the senior pro’s to step up to the plate and find the back of the net; to find the leadership on the pitch to bolster the inexperienced, to give them guidance. Moreover, it is vital that they reverse this decline for there is a direct correlation between their confidence and ours. The longer this run goes on, the less they have (and we have) in their ability to take fourth place.

An Everton defeat on Monday could see Bolton turn up on Saturday in fourth place if Newcastle beat us. To be honest, the way I feel right now, I’ll take a point on Monday and treat it as a victory.

Responses

  1. I’ll be happy with a point against Newcastle and would’ve been happy with 0-0 today (that was before the match!!).

Arsene needs to give the team some target practice and make them watch video’s of Henry in his prime and of the great Ian Wright Wright Wright.

Damn players can’t score for sh!t and it’s really P!551NG me OFF big time!!

They are so bad that they made Rob Green out to be a fantastic goal keeper.

Zamora’s goal was offside but we never get decisions our way so we should expect that.

  2. Arsenal fans can continue to moan and groan about the lack of good players at the club, but at the end of the day, most of the blame if not all must be attributed to Arsene Wenger. He took Arsenal from a phenomenal solid squad to one founded on a useless youth policy, and all this without pressure but by chioce. In the 14 years I have supported this club this current crop is without doubt the worst I have seen. In only a few short seasons we have lost Kanu, Wiltord, Edu, Viera, Pires, Bergkamp, Campbell, Cole and Lauren, only for these players to be inadequately replaced. Battling for forth place for two consecutive seasons is not a coincedence – it is truly the lack of common sence applied by Mr Arsene Wenger.

  3. With the defence so high up it’s no wonder WH were able to score.

I dread to think to of what might have happened if Mu were playing. Their quick break from defence to attack has been one of

their strengths. In truth Arsenal laboured to score and every time they were confronted by a possee of defenders.

That is the story of the season so far. The defenders always group in numbers to thwart the gunners.

Next stop a game against the magpies. I wouldn’t be surprised if the gunners lose again if the defence play so high up. I remember
Fab saying if you play defensive you are anti foot ball. Well if you can win playing ugly why not.

  4. I presume Yogi didnt watch the game. We could have score 3 times in the first 10 mins. Then its game over. Then the fans would say the old Arsenal is back. Then the fans would say next seaon is bright. Then the fans woulds say the line up is brilliant. Then…..

All i’ve to say is that we played well except for scoring. That of cos is the most important part but its something to do with confidence and LUCK. We don’t have either of them yesterday. Confidence is short from the clear chance situation and bad luck when it comes to hitting the bar and post. Look at Chelski goal yesterday. Fuke ? Its luck too. Hit another 10 shots and i bet it’ll come off the defender or idoitic Robinson would have saved it.

Its just not our day and unlike the game at pools. There’s nothing you can do the change yesterday’s game. The lineup is good. The football is good. Just that we didn’t pray hard enough. Better luck on Monday.

  5. Luck has been against us this whole season.

Eboue and Clichy should be barred from shooting when we’re not winning as their shots were by far the worst when there were other players in better positions.

  6. Well, well, well…what a game! In my last post, I stated we had 8 games to lose and people said I was over-emotional; believe me I wish I was. Now, I see us having 7 games to lose which could mean us not only out of the Champions’ League but also out of Europe altogether. I wonder if the InterToto Cup will take us? I’m so glad we have avoided relegation this season but I’m not too confident about next season. Still, having been a fan for more than 28 years, I guess I’ll still be supporting them when they eventually leave this division for a lower one. My only fear is that we will go the Leeds Utd route. Anyone know if we can afford one season without European football without going bust? How about one season out of the Prem?

So third place has now been surrendered to Liverpool with Bolton looking favourites to take fourth; I wonder if Spurs will do to us what we did to them last season and take the 6th spot away from us? The good news is that we have to wait till next season at least before we give up another one of our cherished records: that of never being relegated since the early 1900s.

I think we’ll lose comfortably to Newcastle tomorrow as well as to Spurs and Chelsea. That would leave us with 4 more games to lose but that may be moot as I think losing 9 points will safely see us out of Europe as I can’t see us winning the remaining games. If we are lucky, we’ll draw these and so we’ll get 4 points from our remaining games. Let’s pray Bolton, Spurs, Everton self-destruct soon because we have already done so.

Here’s to next season! Go Gunners!

  7. I see no creativity yesterday. I only see chances. This team is not capable to win any title next season. Adebayor plays without brain. Hope Wenger buys some experience players to improve this current team.

  8. One big bunch of lazy players!

When we attack, so few of us are in the opponent’s penalty box. When we defence, so few of us are in our own penalty box!!

And SACK AW!! So much for saying no need to practise set pieces and penatly shoot. Now we have a bunch of players who cannot shoot.

NOW WE ARE THE LAUGHING STOCK IN THE WHOLE EPL!!!

  9. Arsene’s philosophy of “beautiful” game is not exciting when goals are not scored. I prefer to watch liverpool play now. Cos they can score goals out of nothing and the final result is unpredictable. Arsenal football is getting boring!

  10. The post reflects my frustration at the lack of goals, something that is still felt this morning. I am not saying that the players are crap nor that Wenger has shot his bolt and should be sacked. Quite the opposite.

The squad is brimming with talent but not with goals or confidence. You have to be creative to forge that number of chances but that means nothing if you collect zero points.

Watching Arsenal is not boring, more frustrating yet it is a different frustration than that felt in the period 1975 – 95. Then with a few exceptions, the football was nowhere near as good as now and nowhere near as effective. And there were runs then when you wondered where the next goal was coming from but at least the players then had the excuse that they were totally average, again with one or two exceptions.

HB – as I observed, I saw only the highlights. The performance seemed a lot better but I cannot say authoratatively that it was. Others at the game may be able to do so. I think you are wrong about what we would be saying about the team though had it happened yesterday. Personally, I would have been relieved that they had bounced back but waiting more to see that the performance at Newcastle backed it up rather than chanting from the rooftops that we are world beaters.

I still believe that we will qualify for Europe next season and in the ECL but on the pitch the players need to regain their confidence. This is not down to one or two players; it is all of them collectively. Yes the forwards have the job of scoring the majority of goals but all of them have to chip in which is not happening.

Wholesale changes in the squad in the summer will not solve the problem and will not happen. More importantly, they do not need to happen. It needs augmenting in one or two places but otherwise they are good and capable players.

However, the sad fact is that right now, we are not scoring. And that is a fundamental problem that has to be put right or we are in a seriously big load of the smelly stuff that we shouldn’t be standing in as far as ECL qualification goes.

What is needed for the squads sake is a win; confidence will return following on from that.

  11. hi there! m just tired of moanng of seeing incompetency celebrated!! of wenger trying to nurture more and more cygans. of wenger being scared to shout at hs own players ,but ofcourse at the officals,of adebayor bieng the next henry of alaidiare being the next ronaldo,of wnegr tryng to emulate jose and put gilberto in central defence ,of arsenal players being scared at the sight of the goal keepers!!of arsenal players constantly comparng wth chavski and mu and then gettng beaten by sheffield and westhams!of wenger argung in three of may be 13 years this squad will be good.what the hell why you can just score goas. why adebayor the moron has to make stylish hair cuts when he so fucks up the goals .why rosicky who played so well in th wc looks like a total ball abuser!be may being arsenal fans is torture especialy when even the coach fails to acknoweldge hs mstake !!yes what are we playng no oh shit! we just escaped relegaion no worries then!!

  12. Personally I think the fans bemoaning the lack of bottle amongst the players is the biggest joke of the lot.

Our fans cry like babies at the slightest misfortune. Our players aren’t even vaguely in their class when it comes to lacking balls.

4th is a sign of relegation? Pathetic.

Wenger has “lost the plot”, “should be fired”, etc? Sad.

That said, yesterday was very different to the Pool game.

In the Pool game, our players looked like they were already on holiday and couldn’t give a toss. Yesterday we dominated the game but were unable to score – 28 shots (16 on target), 4 blocked shots vs 6 (2 or 3 on target) 0 blocked.

We have seen this before, btw. We played against Charlton several seasons back, had 28 shots to their 4 and we lost 4-2. That was the trigger to a league title if I’m not mistaken?

That’s not to say we will now suddenly beat everything that moves, life just isn’t like that, but it’s not all doom and gloom neccessarily.

Our biggest problems right now are firstly a lack of confidence (that’s why none of our players want to risk shooting), and secondly, frustration, which leads to a drop in concentration.

Our players throw everything but the kitchen sink at the opposition, but when it fails to go in, we start to lose our drive and will. Our defenders start trying to get involved, but at the same time, our work rate drops because we start doubting ourselves, and we start leaving space at the back.

That’s when we get hit with a sucker punch, just like yesterday, and just like we have had done to us several times this season.

The opposition then puts all 10 outfield players in their own half and stifle any space for us.

They make scoring a virtual impossibility for us, and either hold on for the win, or come away with a draw at worst.

Has anyone else noticed that no other sides face the same lack of space to work in in the opposition half? Manu vs bolt-on being one of the best examples of what I am referring to.

Rule number 1, don’t concede the goal.

We need to maintain discipline at the back first and foremost, that’s the start.

If we can expect a clean sheet, then we can expect at least a point (draw). We can also expect a bit more space to work in up front.

The next part is to start finishing the chances we get.

We showed in the game yesterday that we DO get in on goal, especially earlier in the game when the opposition don’t have a lead to hold on to. We just aren’t putting it in the net.

Some of that is just bad luck (how many times have we hit the post this season?), and some is bad aim – we shoot at the keeper too often.

I’m not sure we work enough at some of the really, really basic stuff in training.

Near post flick-ons from corners might be a bit crude, but they work. We very rarely seem to be doing any of that sort of stuff.

Secondly, a striker needs to practise focusing on where he wants the ball to go, not on the keeper. If he focuses on the keeper, that’s where the ball is going to go, if he focuses on where he wants to place the ball, that’s where it will go. I know it’s really simple, basic stuff, but are we focusing on it in training? It really doesn’t look like it to me, otherwise we wouldn’t be striking straight at the keeper so often.

Our fans need to stop looking for scape-goats.

For some reason, our fans like to select a punch bag, and then nothing that player can do will ever be good enough. Other fan favourites can stuff up left, right and centre, but the punch-bag will still get it in the neck no matter what, even when the player isn’t on the field.

Personally, I find that even more pathetic than any of the team’s performances.

We have some good players. We need some patience. Patience isn’t just about this week or next week, it’s about being patient over long periods, sometimes more than one season even (shock, horror!).

We also need to get away from equating the youth recruitment with the current issues with the team.

The youth recruitment must continue. All good players start somewhere, why not with us? Not all good players have to be bought at huge expense from other clubs, that’s just short-sighted but there has to be some realism involved too. Not every player will become the next Pele, Cruyff or Maradonna. Many, many will just not make the grade for us, but might do well at a slightly lower level, that’s life.

Way too much expectation is placed on players who either don’t belong to us (and very often never will – this isn’t Championship manager 2007), or on some youngster who scores a squillion goals against the blind school.

If and when the relevant player arrives and then fails to deliver, the crowd then starts trashing them because they haven’t lived up to their unrealistic expectations.

Today there seems to be way too little realism or intellect applied to the game by the fans, it’s all about knee-jerk reactions with no insightful analysis, just sound bites and populism, none of which win football matches.

Fans with sense will get behind the team and the manager to get through this patch.

    Are things perfect?

No, of course not, but we’re not about to be relegated either, get some perspective people!

  13. Mike

Pretty much sums it up. Defensively, aside from Liverpool, there is not that much wrong; the major issue is a lack of clean sheets but even then that is not necessarily too much of an issue if you are scoring. But we are not doing that so clean sheets is an issue.

However, let me put this out there. If you ignore the trolls and wind-up merchants, do you not think that the sense and depth of frustration felt is because we know the players are far better than they are showing and have shown since Cardiff?

    YW

  14. The players are very definitely better than what we are seeing YW, that’s without question imo.

However, there is no quick fix or snap of the fingers that is going to sort this out, and yes, the wums, trolls and hysterical children should be ignored, but we seem to have a huge number of them around these days for some reason, so I guess it’s difficult.

I feel that we are currently a bit desperate and rudderless, that’s why we need to get back to basics.

Yes, scoring more goals would render the defensive issues moot, but we need to start with the foundations again, not the roof.

Being assured of a clean sheet is the easiest way to start building confidence, so I think we need Keown back drilling the defence.

We need to give Kolo a rest. He played a really tough patch through the CC campaign, culminating in the final, and I think it drained him.

By focusing on the defence I think we also need to look at the RB position differently for a while.

We saw some great attacking stuff from Eboue and Hleb earlier on in the season, but right now, we need to shore things up, so I would look at a back 4 of Hoyte, Djourou, Gallas and Clichy for the next few games.

I would very definitely play Bert just in front of them as well for a few games.

In the middle and up front, I would look to making some form of partnership between Adebeyor and Baptista work.

Adebeyor works his socks off, and Baptista has the nose for goal that we need, he just needs the confidence, and he needs to be in the starting lineup to get into a game, he is not an impact player that can come on as a sub.

I would look to rotating the wide positions between Rosicky, Hleb and Aliadiare (maybe Freddie too).

It is also time to find a spot for Diaby in the middle on a more regular basis.

Another issue to consider is whether Cesc doesn’t also need a rest, although his performance yesterday was much better than his performance against Pool.

Going forward, I do think that we should be looking at a new keeper, perhaps Gordon from Hearts?

I also think we should be patient with Baptista. Forget all the nonsense about his touch etc. (he does have it if anyone actually bothers to watch him) I suspect that we can get the best out of him once he kicks into gear, after all, we really do need goals from elsewhere other than TH, and he certainly looks a better option to me than anyone else we have, and I include RvP in that (he’s great, but I see him as more of an impact player than a 90 mins contributer for now).

Sure I’d love an Eto’o or three, but they have to be interested in coming first, so we have to be realistic.

The players are good enough. We need to patient, and we need to work on the basics.

  15. I seriously think that if AW continue to stay as manager, there is no way Arsenal is going to win the EPL again.

It has been very obvious to me that the smaller clubs all know how to play with us. Play with 1 striker, crowd the midfield and panelty area, put pressure on us when we have the ball in the final third.

It has been so effective based on the results for the past 3 to 4 years. Initially, the way that AW wants us to play was ok, that was because the smaller clubs has not found the solution.

This thing always happen, and a manager ought to find a solution. I am not sure what the solution is, but definitely not the self-denial way that AW is having. He keeps blaming our luck, the officials, the opponent’s goal keeper, the negative way of the opponent. And at the same time, insisting on his so call entertaining football, attacking from the ground through the centre.

Yes, the movement is beautiful, but once we are in the final third, we are choked, or our finishing let us down most of the time.

Our midfielder refuses to shoot, our strikers who are tall, has terrible aerial prowess. Does anyone anticipat a goal when we earned a corner when a cross flies in?

Yes, I like attacking football, but if it means loosing or allow so many of the smaller clubs to win a draw, I think it is really not entertaining.

  16. Benny

Don’t confuse AW’s public comments with what is said in private. In his decade in charge he has almost stoically refused to criticise players to the media, preferring to turn the spotlight on perceived or real injustices.

He has not suddenly lost the ability to coach overnight, despite what some would have you believe.

That the players refuse to shoot is down to their own self-belief. AW can tell them until the Sun turns blue that they are the best in the world but if they get on the pitch and don’t believe in themselves then there is not much he can do except re-iterate the point.

With a crowded midfield, width is the answer. Don’t forget this is the first season at The Emirates so the players are adjusting to it as well.

AW is not going to be and should not be sacked or even asked to leave. Of course the team can challenge for the title again under his command but never forget, no team has an inalienable right to win the league.

    YW

  17. Hear, hear Mike – nice to hear a bit of sense and perspective.

I am as disappointed as anyone else, but slagging off our own players is not going to help their confidence. Arsene has no choice but to work with the resources he has for the time being. I’m still backing him and the players to do what’s necessary and even if they don’t manage it this season, I’ll be behind them next season too!

  18. ok i wasn`t going to post anything but i feel i need to say something for those young fans we have

i have been a gooner for 25 years now so i remember the good old days when we were happy with 10th place and getting above spurs

yes sure now under AW we should have high expectation
but the thing is that we are still Arsenal the same club that in the 80`s and early 90`s were about the 4-5 biggest club in England.
so i find myself thinking that finishing outside 3-4th place isn`t all that bad. I think AW has been probably the best manager of all time in england
beacuse lifting a club so much that he have done is very very hard from beeing a 8-12 place team to be a 1-4 place on every season. So to my point and that is, the future is bright we have a new stadium that will lift the club to be the biggest or close to it in England maybe the world, we MUST remember that Liverpool, ManU and Chelski Has way more money to spend, but maybe in 10 years time, maybe sooner we will have the same spending power. You don`t build a house in one day, it takes time

cheers mates, keep your heads held high cos we are the Arsenal

  19. YW – i saw the match on telly and the performance is good. I’m not saying its world beaters but enough to win the game easily. There’s marked sign of improvement from pools game too. There is not a lot AW can do and all those who ask for him to be sacked should take a step back and ask yourself what you called him when we won the 49. I remember there are games then which we look as certain to lost as pools game. But we turn it round. Its all about luck. I’m not saying its everything we requires but we had the basis. The style of play, the youth policy, the stadium… to a certain extend the ’supporters’. We just need to see thru this period. Add 1-2 better player nest season, pray hard for healthy and we are ready to fire again. I m very optimistic and i hope you all are with AW.

  20. Friends, I am really concerned and have several reasons to be so:
1- overall despite the extremely poor finishing our game had improved and we “dominated” the game…well let’s remember this was WH at home not Liverpool at Anfield, we are talking about different class …I think monday will show how much the team has improved since the pool defeat
2- Confidence. Part of building a new team with young players is instilling a winning mentality and belief…this is how you make them grow stronger. There is a point when repeated failure becomes quite counter-productive and starts inhibiting the young players development…I have seen France play Austria during International week and I can tell you that Lassana Diara (Chelsea) looked far more confident and lively than Diaby…he was actually almost the star player of the game. and nobody can tell me than Diaby is not a more talented player !
3- Measurable progress. I have a hard time convincing myself that the team has shown significant improvement compared to last season. So far it is CL final and fighting for 4th vs. CC final and fighting for 4th… The maturing / progressing team argument is backed by impressions rather than tangible results I am afraid.
4 – CL qualification stakes. If (God forbid) we do not finish fourth the consequences will be very serious: not only lost revenues, not only AW will struggle to attract “class class” players (Ribery for instance wants CL football) BUT AW will spend the summer fire fighting to keep his squad as I reckon some of the most talented youngsters will start being attracted elsewhere (after all they want CL football as well…)

All in all a high stake, stressful end of season…

  21. I agree with Tokala.
Comparing the Pool preformance to this game is not right. Two completly different teams, and considering Anfield compared til Ash Grove?
I know the team was better yesterday, but better against a team on the other side of the league table.

Newcastle tomorrow, hope we can bounce back after this. Will be a huge task though, but im confident we will..

  22. Do you guys remember how much abuse I got when I said that we’re going to lose against West Ham and then lose our CL position?

Well looks as though everyone else feels the same and I should be owed an apology for making a good prediction!

I predict that we will thump the toon army 4-0.

  23. just looked at the fixtures think weve blown it unless we get a couple of good results.

newcastle – a point at best
    bolton – 1 point
    man city – 3
    spurs – 0
    fulham – 3
    chelsea – 0
    portsmounth – 1

    gives us 64

    bolton

    everton 3
    us – 1
    reading 3
    chelsea 0
    west ham 0
    villa 3

    63

    the danger team are spuds

    got 48 at the moment

    wigan – 3
    us – 3
    boro – 1
    chartlon 1
    blackburn 3
    man city 3

gives them 62 but they could win at charlton / boro which could but them above use.

    surely it cant happen

  24. Mike has got it spot on.

Defending & defending as a team is the key. We cannot carry on giving the opposition the confidence of a lead that allows them to camp in front or in their penalty area.

It is that lack of discipline that has cost us dear this season.

I really don’t think it is a personel problem, we really do have quality players but I at times we are so on top that that they just get caught out. This does not happen to a title winning side.

The good thing though is that we do normally create multiple chances against massed defenses & not many teams do that. The absence of TH14 & RVP has been crucial to the confidence of the whole team. You could say that is a weakness in the squad but take away their equivalants away from Man U & Chelsea & they would have problems too.

Mike is correct that Kolo is clearly operating at about 70% and needs a good rest. I would play Djourou for the rest of the season because the more games he gets this season the better he will be next. I believe we need the big bloke in one of the CB positions.

The rest of this season is a worry & it will be a tight scrape to get into the CL but I think a lot of lessons will have have been learnt.

I do wish some people had some realism. In view of the particular circumstances, this season, we might have done better but we also could have done a lot lot worse.

Have faith & don’t accuse the players of having “no bottle” when you havn’t got any yourselves.

  25. [...] Creativity Counts For Nothing If There’s No End Product Arsenal 0 – 1 West Ham United 0 – 1 Zamora (45) Re-arrange this set of words to come up with a well-known phrase: […] [...]

  26. Worst case scenario, we end up with 60 points and finish 7th. Best case scenario, we end up 3rd by some miracle. Either way, I’m still a Gunner through and through and will support whatever team is out there next season. If we lose players because they want to play in Europe so be it; at least we keep the ones that are true blue Arsenal. I’ve supported the team since ‘79 and if I could put up with years of underperformance, I certainly can do the same for the next few years of transition. Again, I only worry about the Ashburton Grove Albatross around our necks and if we can survive without our necks getting broken while we try to rebuild. Otherwise, here’s to next season!

  27. Two words – Pi res
