Alves, Fernandez & Co

Which soulds like an Iberian firm of Lawyers but no, merely the names we are linked with and more on that later.

Its nearly time for the weekend and a veritable smorgasbord of football with two games in three days. I was so excited I nearly previewed them all today. But no, I managed to contain it and they will come as it happens.

First off, for those who contact me yesterday (and anyone else who wanted to but couldn’t be arsed), there are Real Media files of the Danny Baker call at The Internet Treehouse, towards the bottom of the left hand side column.

Back to Arsenal; Arsene has espoused his view about the Reserves joining the League and playing in the Championship. Whilst it may be good for Arsenal and their ilk, it is not for the other Clubs in the Football League. With the complaint being that the Reserve Structure is not working in England, perhaps that is what needs to be revisited before this idea gets any momentum. People are citing the attendance at The Emirates for the Youth Cup as possible proof for demand but I sincerely doubt that it is (a) economic for the Club to operate a full season at those pricing levels for the Reserves and (b) given that was a one-off, semi-final and a chance for those who struggle to get tickets to get to visit the new ground, it is unlikely that such attendances would be recurring more than once or twice a season. And that is without even going into the damage it will do to the pitch.

Transfer news seems to be picking up pace; following on from the embryo known as Gilles Sunu, the marginally more developed Yago Fernandez seems to be heading in Arsenal’s direction, rather than heading to Anfield. The defender is currently on an amateur contract with Valencia B and will cost around £100k, according to Sky Sports.

Daniel Alves is also being linked with the club following on from a good season at Sevilla – ring any bells? An attacking full-back or right sided midfielder, he could be a welcome addition to the squad. He would certainly challenge Alex Hleb for a place which could be what the Belorussian needs to regain his focus. Interestingly enough – you know that means that the anorak in me is going to strike now – Hleb has the second highest percentage of tackles won in the Arsenal midfield. According to Opta, he has won 80%, only bettered by Gael Clichy who is up in the low 90%’s. More food for thought for his detractors.

Anyway, that is it for today given that is slow news time and I’m making a conscious effort not to talk about the past, for a couple of days at least.

TTFN.

  1. What are the chances of Wenger giving up on Ribery who’s had more clubs than Anelka and going for Samir Nasri instead?

Nasri seems to be a class player and would cost half as much as Ribery would.

I’ve seen Nasri play and he is awesome!

  2. Lies, damned lies and statistics!
Opta once had our follically challenged super hero Pascal as a better defender than John Terry.
Questions is how many tackles has AH13 made. If it is only 5 all season, then so what?

  3. From memory, he had made 55 tackles, winning 44 of them. To put it in perspective, Clichy had made something like 80 or 90, Fabregas 70-odd.

Now how they define a tackle would be the interesting thing.

  4. Has anyone heard any reviews of Yogi “The Bear” Fernandez??

Only thing I’ve found is that he’s apparently unbeatable 1 on 1.

  5. sort his diving out and we have the worlds best RB in the world. Easily the best Arsenal crosser of the ball. Yago would be great cover. We are too one dimensional, how come we don’t go for squared ball option, when we run into stubborn defences like PSV, Wengers’ got to adapt or die.

  6. hello beautiful blog congratulations visitme please

  7. Hleb should have the first highest percentage of tackles in the Arsenal midfield, But Arsene is keeping him for substitution all the time.

  9. Hleb should learn how to shoot not tackle
