The Revolving Door Is Starting To Turn…

Having looked yesterday at the possibles for the remainder of the season, perhaps now is good time to look ahead to the Summer and beyond. Specifically, at the personnel and movements in and out of the Club. As I have stated this week, I do not think that there will be a major overhaul of the squad this year because it is not necessary. Genuinely, that is what I believe. There is sufficient talent already realised that needs to have experience added to it and but realistically, we have to accept that there will be departures and arrivals. First of all though, I will divide the current first team squad into those who I think will stay and those whom I believe may be leaving Arsenal:

Remaining

Goalkeepers: Almunia

Defenders: Hoyte, Eboue, Gallas, Toure, Senderos, Djourou, Clichy, Traore

Midfielders: Hleb, Rosicky, Fabregas, Gilberto, Diaby, Denilson

Forwards: Henry, Adebayor, van Persie, Baptista, Bendtner, Walcott

Possible Departures

Goalkeepers: Lehmann

Defenders: Gilbert

Midfielders: Muamba, Ljungberg

Forwards: Aliadiere, Lupoli

Now some of those on the way out have already affirmed their intention to go – Lupoli – whilst others on loan have seen their potential routes to the First Team blocked by the emergence of others – Gilbert & Muamba.

Lehmann may yet stay and to be honest, it would not surprise me if he did yet there is a real possibility of him being offered a two-year deal elsewhere which is his right to accept. Nobody can have any complaints about that decision were he to take it and whilst he is still able to hold down the Number One spot, perhaps this is a good time to bring in some new blood. Which leaves Ljungberg and Aliadiere. It is not a sign of a mystic gift to believe they will be shown the door, somewhat unwillingly in Freddie’s case but I believe that they hold two positions that need changing. In JA’s case, much will depend on whether Baptista stays. It is my belief that he will and that will not be a universally popular decision with fans if Arsene decides to do so. With Bendtners return to the Club, JA though slips further down the pecking order, even further if you consider that Theo sees himself as a central striker rather than a winger.

So if they leave, who do we bring in? Below is my view on the “current” replacements:

Goalkeepers

Nominations are: Akinfeev, Buffon, Carson, Coupet, Gomes, Gordon

No doubt Arsene has others but these are the ones that anyone has heard of. Buffon for me is a non-starter. He will blow most of the Clubs transfer budget, something that AW will be reluctant to do in one go. The other reason that I don’t believe that Buffon will come to The Emirates is that should he become available, the public utterances that were made last Summer lead me to believe that he will stay in Italy with Internazionale or AC Milan being the probable destination. Of the remainder, I believe Carson to also be unlikely on the grounds that Liverpool will be reluctant to release him to a rival. Plus, there is no certainty that Reina will remain their Number One if Carson returns given the form shown by the two this season. Which leaves Akinfeev, Coupet, Gordon and Gomes. Of those, most of us will have seen the Russian and Brazilian at close quarters in the Champions League this season. Neither did anything that shook the belief both will be capable of holding down the main Goalkeeper role at the Club; both have reportedly been in imperious form for their Clubs, Gomes credited with being responsible for PSV’s eight point lead. Akinfeev has kept goal well for CSKA and has European honours to match his reputation. Neither would be cheap, probably around the £5m to £8m mark. Coupet though is the one that I believe Arsene will plump for. It is also likely that he has seen more of Coupet than any of the others in recent years and knows his game inside out. The Lyon ‘keeper has plenty of Champions League experience which is something Arsene will want. Moreover, he is now ensconced as France’s first choice following Barthez’s retirement and that in itself carries some kudos. Craig Gordon at Hearts has been strongly linked but at the risk of those hailing from North of the Border, I’m thinking Alan Rough, Frank Haffey and Stewart Kennedy. Or perhaps more pertinently, George Wood and Jim Leighton. Sorry, but I just cannot get my head around the concept of a good Scottish goalkeeper. Kind of like a good Brazilian ‘keeper, it just doesn’t sit comfortably in the mind. Gomes? Brazilian? Yea Gods, the Sky is falling in! Gordon is a genuine contender for The Emirates, putting in solid displays for Hearts in recent seasons, being the Player of the Year in 2005 / 06 Season. At twenty five, potentially he could be a long term replacement for Lehmann, something that weighs heavily in his favour.

Defenders:

No nominations here because I genuinely do not believe that we need a new Centre Half, Right Back or Left Back. There is clamour building for Senderos to be replaced but with Connolly coming on in Reserve, do we need to look outside of the Club for any replacement? That said, I am not convinced that Senderos will be sacrificed. He reminds me of a young Tony Adams, the same criticisms were heard of him from without and within during the early days and look at the career he had. Senderos has much to learn still in his trade and with Djourou there, showing a considerable amount of potential, with Gilberto available in emergencies, I would suggest that there are more than enough defenders to cover injuries and suspensions. However, an outside punt may be worth looking at is signing Vincent Kompany from Hamburg. Unlikely that he would stay around in the event of Hamburg’s relegation although at the moment that seems unlikely, he could be available for around £5m. He would be a worthwhile addition to the squad, comfortable on the ball and with Champions League experience. Personally, despite his good season at ‘Boro, I would be surprised if Woodgate was signed in view of his injury problems in the past and it would mean a serious plethora of Centre Halves at the Club.

Midfielders:

Candidates: Babel, Barnes, Quaresma, Ribery, van der Vaart

There are a lot of wide players whom you could see Arsene signing but I have picked just four; Barnes would be an archetypal Wenger signing. He is young and full of promise , performing well for Derby. From my limited viewing, he has shown plenty of trickery but I feel on this occasion AW will require experience something that Barnes totally lacks. Babel would be a signing in the mould of van Persie and Walcott. Essentially a central striker but for the rigours of the Premiership, AW would probably put him as a wide man. He is a close friend of RvP and has visited The Emirates, the source of the transfer speculation. Marco van Basten believes him to be the best talent in Holland at the moment, something that is praise indeed. Babel knows where the goal is so can theoretically contribute goals, something lacking in the current midfield. Quaresma like Ribery is an out and out winger and he has an impressive touch. van der Vaart surprised people by signing for Hamburg yet is another who would fit well at The Emirates, his pace and vision would be a welcome addition. Ribery is the one though that I believe most Arsenal supporters will plump for. Highly rated by all and sundry, he has played outside of France before with a short spell at Galatasaray. He strikes me as the closest to Robert Pires of the three and I have to say, is someone who would be a welcome addition at The Emirates.

Forwards:

An interesting decision for Arsene to make and I am not sure a forward is high on his list of priorities as I have a hunch that RvP and Henry are going to be his first choice strikers next season. However, there is no certainty he will sign Baptista but a reasonable one that Aliadiere will leave. With Bendtner back, but unproven, the squad looks light in the forward line so he may want another goalscorer around to cover emergencies, injuries and suspensions.

Nominations: Eto’o, Robinho, Torres, Villa

Of that particular bunch, none. Robinho would in my opinion offer nothing that we do not already have. Eto’o is a Fantasy League signing, the money demanded if he were available simply out of Arsenal’s reach. Torres I remain unconvinced by but is undeniably talented whilst Villa is the one that everyone wants in the shopping basket. He and Eto’o are the goalscorers that the team really needs and I would expect Arsene to sign someone of that style. Given cash is not as plentiful as at Old Trafford or in seemingly endless pockets of Abramovich, any auction would see us priced out of bidding for both. Villa and Torres I am not convinced will come to this country in any event with Barcelona the supposed chosen destination for Torres and Villa I have a feeling, staying put at Valencia.

Looking around Europe, Fred at Lyon could be a potential target at a cheaper price, and has a record of a goal virtually every other game for the French champions; Steve Savidan to me could be an outside punt as well, the Valenciennes forward seems a Wenger player with goals every other game or so, low profile and currently leading scorer in Le Championnat. Counting against him though is age and at 29, he may be a touch older than Arsene wants in one who is unproven at the highest level. Bremen’s Miroslav Klose in Germany has been averaging around a goal every other game for the past four seasons and would add some aerial threat, having the requisite CL and International experience. The usual suspects of Luca Toni and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are mentioned regularly when looking for experienced forwards but I suspect that the former is deemed too old at thirty whilst the latter comes with a Government Health Warning on his temperament. Finally, in Spain, Diego Milito at Zaragoza is a consistent scorer whilst Robert at Betis has the advantage of not being able to hit a Cow’s Arsenal with a Banjo from the penalty spot.

Realistically though, I expect Arsene to pull a rabbit out of the hat with a low-profile forward who can be schooled in the Arsenal ways.

One final word, there is no inside track on this one; I have no knowledge of targets as you can tell. But given this is the first Summer for quite a few seasons where there appears to be scope for genuine transfer activity, i.e. the Club have money and several players appear to have reached the end of the road, it could be interesting times ahead.

Responses

  1. The player I would like to see at Arsenal most is Anderson of Porto. He can play in midfield or upfront & he is being touted as the new Ronaldinho. He is more skillfull than Babel and wont be as risky as someone like Quaresma. I like Quaresma he is an amazing player but he’s not made for the premiership. Ribery is not a goal scorer & will cost more than the others

  2. Goal – You forgot Boruc in your roundup but my gut feeling is that we’ll go for either Gordon or Akinfeev.
Defence – I agree with your assertion that we don’t need to acquire more players as I believe our biggest deficiency is in our defensive drills & set-piece play rather than the players themselves. Whether we look to overhaul our defensive coaching methods is another question entirely…
Midfield – Babel has just signed a contract extension with Ajax so I would imagine any talk of him coming to us was just a typical manoeuvre on the part of his agent to secure the best deal there. I’m also assured by my Sp*rs supporting brother-in-law that Barnes is heading their way this summer. Can’t see us going for van der Vaart either as he prefers playing through the middle so perhaps we will make another bid for Ribery – we could certainly use the width.
Attack – Not too sure we really need anyone for this area if Vela & Bendtner are set to join the 1st team & as long as van Persie & Henry are available for the start of next season.

  3. nightmook- Vela has done well for Salamanca this year but second flight Spanish football is a long way from Premiership. I don’t think he will be in the first team squad next time. I read somewhere that the club were expecting problems with a work permit although there is the ‘exceptional talent’ get out clause that they have used before so perhaps it is a done thing. As for Boruc, personally I am not convinced by him. If AW believes he is the ‘real deal’ then so be it; the scouts will have watched him more closely than I.

Contract extensions mean nothing, merely guaranteeing the club the best price although looking back through other sites, Babel seems to want one more year at Ajax before moving – [thwack! bad research on bloggers part. Nothing new I hear you cry...] As for Barnes, well if he wants his career to come to a full stop that is his choice!

    Ash

Good point about Anderson, he slipped the radar. There is also Jesus Navas at Sevilla who is apparently a bit of a boy wonder. Unfortunately he suffers badly from homesickness; so badly he cannot fly to away games which kind of rules out a move to London. We’ve been stung once already by Sevilla with that one so I doubt Navas will be on Arsene’s shopping list!

As an aside, can the person who got to this site via the Search Engine Query of ‘Anthony Stokes Drugs’ contact me. I am, to say the least intrigued. Use the email addy on the ‘About’ page. And yes, before the Lawyers crawl all over it, I do have proof that this was a genuine query noted on the Blog.

  4. I’m not saying Vela’s ready for 1st team action rather that should he, along with Bendtner, join the squad we’d have an abundance of talent there even if Aliadiere were to move on & Baptista fail to secure a permanent deal. For the record, I believe a fit Henry & van Persie along side Adebayor, Walcott & Bendtner would a more than adequate forward line for a premiership assault next season as long as we were to add the necessary width & atleast 1 other experienced player to help get the best out of the strikers & the rest of the team.
Also, I agree that contract extensions mean next to nothing these days but by the same token it’s no coincidence that many half-decent players are most often linked to us just before signing deals with their current clubs…
Ash – good shout on Anderson

  5. Bendtner seems to be the ‘Cat amongst the Pigeons’ in everyone’s book. He’s shown he can score in The Championship and in his limited International experience. Can he ‘Cut The Mustard’ in the Premiership? I think so, which is why I would almost be partly surprised if AW splashed the cash on a centre forward.

  6. I thought that was a very well thought out article. I disagree about the CB. We need someone large with a commanding presence ala Adams or at least Campbell (since Adams don’t grow on trees) or at least with great sense of position. Senderos has the size but seems to have stopped getting better. Woodgate would be great if he can continue to stay injury free, a big if, but Arsenal’s training regime is fairly advanced and that might help. Maybe we can get him thrown in with Baptista for Reyes (wishful thinking I know).

  7. Why do you think that Gilbert is out? It sounds like he’s been performing well for Cardiff and at the beginning of the season, many people felt that the wrong English full-back at been sent away on-loan.

Also, while Justin Hoyte’s performances have solidified in recent weeks, he still just doesn’t seem to be of the same class and calibre of most of the other Arsenal players. Yet I still prefer him to the temperamental, play-acting, etc. Eboue — who needs to be either sorted out or shown the door ASAP.

  8. Vela has been likened to Leo Messi in the Spanish press, I think he is scheduled to join us next January

    Yogi’s Warrior

agree about Navas, with Reyes and Baptista I dono if we should move for another Seville player lol Alves looks the part though & I think Wenger is considering him. He mentioned him in the buildup to Portugal Brazil as a player to look out for

Here’s a nice compilation of Anderson

  9. Eboue – get rid, a diving cheat… firey and a liability.. great going forward and delivers a super ball into the box but he lts jimself and the club down -

  10. I like the idea of Woodgate because I’m not sure about big Phil. Woodgate has played well against Arsenal and as much as I prefer the foreign legion a good old English defender with some ball skills could be good. When I saw Gilbert early in the season he looked good to me, better than Hoyte. I say give him a shot.
Main signing has to be Ribery. Perfect Pires replacement only faster and tougher. Freddie & Alliadare have to go, both are not long term solutions. Walcott has to play up front and will become the new Michael Owen. Goalkeeper has to be Akimfeev. The only striker if we sign one has to be Torres, but he could be too slow and too expensive.
I only say that because I dont know enough of the new young strikers that might be coming through. Oops I forgot Bendtner, he has to be given a chance. I hope we keep Baptista because he has shown enough to be given a chance to really adapt to Premiership football. He’s really a little different and with more time could be special.
The future is bright and I would rather be trophyless this year and see how well the young guns have progressed than watch some of the other boring crap served up by most of the other teams.
Arsenal style forever and one day we will continually walk it into the net and always score the perfect goal.

  11. Kameni is another contender foor goal keeper. He has single handedly filled the highlight reels of best saves from spain for the last two years and saved a more than shakey Espanyol defence more time sthan they’d like to remember. Him, Akinfeev or Gordon would be most likely and are all long term. Coupet won’t come even though he’d be a free transfer, he’s pretty old now and has stated his intention to move to the MLS ala Beckham at the end of the season.

Ribery would be nice but it would involve a bidding war with Madrid and i’m not sure we want to go there. Babel would be most likely regardless of new contract with Ajax as that could have been done just to assure they get good money. Anderson would be an excellent signing to but i think he’s said he would like to go to Spain, Barca and Valencia are supposedly intersted.

Don’t need defenders or strikers but if had to pick a most likely one for both it’d be Kompany and Torres, although i dont really see either of them happening.

  12. Good article. Agree with most of what you say, but I severely doubt that Baptista will be back unless Real slash their valuation of him. He does offer something different, but his touch is brutal, not really fitting into Wengerball. VdV is a good call to replace Freddie as the goalscoring midfielder we desperately need, but as others have pointed out, he’s most effective in the middle as he lacks pace. I think he could play on the flank and can be a real game-changer, and has real football intelligence like Pires and Bergy. Ribery plays more on instinct like Reyes.

Don’t really rate Carson or Boruc. Gomes has been outstanding for PSV for the past two seasons, and I think fits in the way we play. He commands his area and anticipates really well. He’s not as adventurous as Mad Jens, but I think he can adapt.

  13. This is going to be a long long summer, isn’t it?

I think there will be very few changes. 2-3 max depending on if Jems stays or not.

The squad is probably getting too big but it will be a year more experienced and most of our young players have improved tremendously.

Swiss Tony is possibly an exception but he has had a fractured season and he is at the same stage of his career when Tony Adams was starting to get the donkey treatment.

Denilson is too good to leave out now. That frees Gilberto to extend his career at CB, where I think he will be excellent. He will cut out the couple of mistakes he made against. That fees Kolo to play RB or midfield, when a bit of beef is required. Kolo is a fantastic CB but he can offer more elsewhere.

Our defensive problems have been more organisational than personel. A settled defensive unit would certainly help, something we have not had all season.

We should have a revitalised TH14 next season. The enforced rest we do him the world of good. RVP is a true talent. We will have backup from Ade,Theo + ?? Beast, Bentner,Vela,Aliadiere.

    Beast- just don’t know.

Aliadiere- I really hope he takes his opportunities. I would like to see him do a reverse TH14 and be converted to a goalscoring winger. A position we can improve on.

Players in I just don’t know enough about the players you are talking about but often they are no better than what you have got.

You do need a bit of freshening up and if the right opportunity arises, Arsene will take it, but I hope he doesn’t sign a “name” just to appease the “want it now” brigade. I am sure he won’t.

Without the injuries who knows what could have been done this season? Next season may be the same as this but the basis of this squad will eventually bring us plenty of genuine silverwear.

  14. I admit I haven’t seen much of Ribery, but what I saw of him in the World Cup was not that impressive and I didn’t think he linked up well with Thierry. I wonder how much people that are trumpetting his name have actually seen of him or are they affected by all the hype that we were about to sign him last summer? I think he is a non-starter.

I believe that Arsene was looking for Theo to become that Reyes replacement – speedy winger who could set up and score a few goals and then move into the centre as Thierry starts to slow down and move back to the second striker/Bergkamp role. Whether this season’s experience has changed his mind and he will splash the cash for another winger remains to be seen.

  15. Henry must and will go. Do not delude yourself. We cannot pay £120,000 per week to someone who has lost it. He is also disruptive among a good young team. Like Vieira, he has stayed between a year and 18 months too long and it has harmed the club.

  16. Passenal

I too thought Ribery was pretty average at the World Cup but frorm what I have seen this season, he could do a good job at Arsenal.

The problem Arsene has is if he brings in a midfielder, who will he leave out when he has his strongest XI available. Whilst the team will be rotated according to the fixtures and fitness, surely next season we can have our strongest team out once. Can’t we???

    Lowe Ebb

You seriously believe Henry has lost it? Unbelievable comment. Look at the facts: he still has the highest scoring rate at the Club even though he has missed a considerable portion of the season. Just remember that the standards he has set are incredibly high, something that mere mortals do not even bother aspiring to. Let me ask you this question. If you had an off day or two at work, would you expect your boss to sack you if you had been a star performer for the preceding five years? Would you put your body on the line for your boss? No, thought not.

    Flint

You are not wrong. It is going to be an incredibly long summer. But the sun will be shining, the beer flowing, the birds will be singing and hey, football never really stops. Although I have a feeling that the pre-season friendlies may not come around soon enough!!!!

  17. Three Words : Klaus jan Huntlaar?!

Got another hat-trick at the weekend for Ajax against Twente! Wouldnt be that expensive and is potentially the next Ruud van Nistelrooy?! Him and RvP next year with TH14 playing behind them would be unbelievable?! He’d solve are “Fox in da Box” problem because hes an out n out goal scorer! He got the very first goal in the Emirates as well LOL?! I definately reckon that Wenger is gona buy this chap n i’ve predicted signings of players before, hope this one comes true?!

Come on Arsenal, quadruple next year ! ! !

  18. Ribery may join Arsenal, but I have very serious doubt about the fact that he could survive and thrive in such a physical league. He is already struggling physically in the French league. Averaging 2 serious injuries or the equivalent of 3 months out per season. Also, I am not convinced that we need an extra right footed winger. We need a left footed winger. Selling Quincy may have been good to balance the book, but in term of personnel it was a stupid move. With his pace and trickery he would have been ideal in locked game.

IMHO, Bale or Babbel would be more useful. Bale converted into a left sided midfield. Both Bale and Babel would offer something that except Rosicky no other midfield players do: the threat of goal by shooting.

Baptista should be sent back. His first touch is atrocious. Despite being big and powerful, he has no idea how to use his attribute. He needs somebody to draw the defender away from him. SInce his departure, Sevilla has not been struggling, quite the contrary. With Kanoute, they may even win the league.

Arsenal has already requested a special dispensation for exceptional talent for Carlos Vela for next season. If he gets the dispensation, he will be awesome for us, powerful quick and very skillful player he is a scorer. If he is not allowed in UK, he will play an extra year in Spain and gets a spanish passport. In that case, I expect that Bendtner will be given his chance.

Justin Hoyte may not be world class, but he is steadier hand than Eboue. Kerrea Gilbert is also likely to come back as a full back backup as he can play both side. WIth the ANC in January and February,
Kerrea Gilbert could be right back cover for Hoyte when Eboue is away.

During that period, we are going to lose Adebayor, Toure, Eboue from our first team.
The only saving grace is that Chelsea is also likely to lose Essien, Drogba, Mikel, Geremy and possibly Kalou if he decides to join the to Cote d’Ivoire after his attempts to play for Holland failed.
Liverpool will lose just Sissoko from their first team.
ManUtd will not be affected, as they currently do not have a single African in their first team.

But Bolton, Blackburn, Newcastle will struggle without their main player (Diouf, McCarthy, Nonda, Martins, …).

  19. Thanks YW – I haven’t seen Ribery since the World Cup so I really have no idea whether there is more to him than I saw then.

I agree that we have a very good midfield, but I do worry that another winger/midfielder will stunt the progress of Diaby and Denilson, which would be a shame. On the right Hleb and Eboue showed last season that they can have a very solid and productive partnership. I think injuries to both have hit us hard and stopped that partnership developing. On the left, Clichy has been improving by leaps and bounds, once he learns to do more with the ball when he gets into the opposition’s penalty box, that could provide the width that some people feel we need. I’m not so convinced that a winger will make a huge difference as our problem is not making goal scoring opportunities, it’s not taking them that has been our downfall!

  20. god i hope we sign somebody.
keepers: boruc, akinfeev. can we have both?
defense: kompany, RB to replace eboue
    midfield: nuri sahin,
    forward: bendtner!

    first team:
    boruc, akinfeev.
toure, gallas, senderos, djourou, kompany, clichy, traore, hoyte, 2nd rb.
fabregas, rosicky, hleb, gilberto, walcott, nuri sahin, denilson, fran merida, diaby.
henry!, rvp, bendtner, aliadiere, adebayor, vela.

  21. we need a dominating center half like Woodgate. An expierenced goal scoring midfielder like Kaka, Lampard or van der vart a fox in the box – Klaus Jan Huntlaar + the obvious keeper situation in which i would say Gomes would be the best bet.
Henry is past his best it would be the end of an era but if you can swap him for Kaka + sign Eto’o not a bad deal.

  22. Some good and well thought out responses here.

Here’s my 2p, I won’t give all my reasons for selling as most have been well explained in the replies above.

    Sell: Eboue (7M), Ljungberg (2M), Hleb (6M), Gilberto (6M), Aliadiere (3M), Senderos (5M)

Buy: Akinfeev (CSKA), Alex (PSV), Yaya Toure (Monaco), Villa (Valencia)

Alternatives: Carson (Liv), Woodgate (Madrid), Appiah (Fenerbahçe), Huntelaar (Ajax)

Akinfeev (21) will dominate and win you games
Alex (25) will dominate and win you games
Yaya Toure (24) will nullify opposition
Villa (26) will win you games

They are all early/mid-twenties and fit in with the incredible crop of youngsters we have. They are all power players with the magic spark that will win you games and exactly the right age/experience profile to bring the best out of our young lions. Appiah (I think) is the slightly better Def Mid (ahead of Yaya Toure) although I think Yaya has more potential yet to be fulfilled. Also – playing with his brother will add a little something that I will briefly digress upon:

Wenger has had his greatest sucessess with little partnerships all over the field: Henry-Pires, Petit-Vieira, Bergkamp-Overmars (and these are just the same-country ones), you also have the Fabregas-Henry, Pires-Cole, Bergkamp-Henry.

I would like to see a 4-3-3 of:
    Akinfeev
    K.Toure, Alex, Gallas, Clichy
    Rosicky, Y.Toure, Fabregas
    van Persie, Villa, Henry

Subs: Gk, Djourou, Diaby, Denilson, Adebeyor, Walcott, K.Gilbert, Bendtner

Although the Emirates is wide, Wenger simply doesn’t play wingers, and never 2 wingers. We rely on lots of movement from the front players and overlapping wingbacks (Clichy, Eboue (sell the talented cheating liability imho), K.Toure, Hoyte, Traore). Our passing makes use of the space.

Btw I’ve put Denilson (and Diaby) on the bench for the time being, not because I don’t rate them (far from it), I just think that Rosicky and Toure provide more experience and actually more goal threat.

Now – for the ‘pairs’, Gallas-Clichy, Toure brothers, Alex-Denilson, Alex-Gallas (how dominant would that be?!?), Fabregas-Villa, Rosicky-van Persie. (On top of the existing pairs).

I know people think Alex *IS* a Chelski players already, but in fact they only have the ‘option’ to buy him from PSV. As you can see from the games against us, he is utterly dominant (in much the same way Terry/Ferdinand are/were for their teams – only better).

Akinfeev is a different class in goal.

I think he and Gallas would be amazing and pretty much unbeatable on the ground and in the air. Clichy and K.Toure provide such power and dynamism from the flanks, and are uncompromising in the tackle.

A midfield of Fabregas, Y.Toure and Rosicky (sub Diaby, Denilson) have immense penetration, vision and playmaking not to mention dynamism and ball-winning, ball-keeping and ball-playing.

These would feed (right-footed) Henry on the left, (left-footed) van Persie on the right with Mr Fox in the Box David Villa in the middle. That is a whole lot of firepower.

Wenger has more often than not used alternate flank/footed players as it offers many more options than the obvious cross. A right footed player cutting in from the left can shoot/cross for the far post, shoot for the near post, square it for an incoming midfielder and the defender will normally have overshot that player.

With Diaby, Denilson, Bendtner, Adebeyor, Walcott, Merida, Vela, Connelly coming through we have lots of talented cover.

It would be an expensive summer, but I think those recruits would stand us in good stead for a good 5-8 years and don’t impede the players coming through too much.

  23. Easy tigers – a few tight games have gone the other way, Henry has been on one leg for the season, the Chelsea ruck cost us Kolo and the big man and we haven’t been able to put the same defensive unit out two weeks running let alone RVP breaking his foot and Gallas being crocked, lets face it its just been one of those seasons.

Look at the form of Diaby – the boy will be a god and looks like Viera II, Gallas is class and Kolo will sweat blood for the shirt. Henry is make or break in the summer but honestly do we need him? If I offered you a swap of Henry for Ribery, Guily and a finisher like a 20 year old Robbie Fowler who among you would not rip my arm off??

Arsene knows best and he makes good players great the squad is building and I have already popped a small investment on Arsenal for the prem next year.

Polish international goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski has signed for Arsenal from Legia Warsaw on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee.

Fabianski (22) won the Polish League Championship with Legia Warsaw in 2005/06 and his consistent performances earned him a place in the Poland squad for the FIFA World Cup in Germany last summer.

Manager Arsène Wenger said: “We are pleased to have signed Lukasz Fabianski. He is a very good young goalkeeper who will provide good support to our squad. He has performed consistently well for Legia Warsaw in recent seasons and was rightfully rewarded with a place in the Polish World Cup squad. Lukasz will be a big asset our squad and we are looking forward to him joining us for pre-season.”

After completing his move to the Gunners, Fabianski said: “I am delighted to be joining Arsenal. They are a great Club with many world class players and I am really looking forward to meeting my new team mates.
