Tonight’s Team News – Liverpool vs Arsenal

The squad for tonights game has been named as follows:

Almunia, Poom; Hoyte, Connolly, Toure, Traore, Djourou; Diaby, Fabregas, Baptista, Denilson, Song, Lansbury, Randall; Aliadiere, Walcott

Based on that, the team will probably be:
Almunia; Hoyte, Toure, Djourou, Traore; Walcott, Fabregas, Denilson, Song, Baptista; Aliadiere

with the subs being

Poom, Connolly, Randall, Diaby, Lansbury

Another mix of young and not-so-young. The biggest surprise for me is the absence of Flamini. His inclusion would have allowed a 4-4-2 formation with Baptista and Aliadiere up front. He may still do so, bringing in Randall for Denilson and moving Walcott to the left. However, I do not expect that to happen as the midfield would be too inexperienced, Baptista likely to be in the slightly advanced role. To save you looking him up, Henri Lansbury is apparently the longest serving member of the Academy having been there since the age of 9, and was recently captain of the England U-16’s team.

Nothing I have seen leads me to believe that we will progress in the competition. I understand why Arsene has done it – the team is consistent with previous rounds and years, and the full first team played some 72 hours ago – but is at odds with his own comments on the official website,

“Playing Tottenham in the Semi-Finals is a huge incentive for us and of course having played Liverpool in the FA Cup we will go up there again with the same desire. The target is to beat Liverpool twice. Going into the Semi-Finals of the Carling Cup is a great motivation for us and we will try to do it.”

Beating Liverpool twice was a tall order with a full squad, with this mix I would suggest that climbing Everest is seen as being a doddle by comparison. Still, I would have to agree that having a good team out on Saturday is more important than the Carling Cup although I believe once you get to the Quarter Finals, any cup competition should be taken seriously.

Back tomorrow with a Report.

  1. it seems mr wenger is loosing his mind, and if he looses this trophy and he goes a head of not wining the CL,FA,AND the primier league what is he going to tell the supporters.to me i know this is like some body who washes his closes and then he put them in soil .if mr wenger can read this msg let him do us a faver and put in one important or senior player
I will be happy if he does so but if the selected team remain we may not see any trophy this season

  2. Generally I havent got a problem with Wenger bedding in a few younsters to gain experience in the Carling Cup, two points I agree with your assertion that once you get to the quarters it should be taken seriously. The second point to support this would be that it wouldnt be so bad if we started with such a team but had expeience on the bench to come on to prevent a defeat. I remember chelsea in this comp in Vialli’s day when we lost 5-0, if Liverpool start with the team we beat the other day we have to be careful. Dont think it will be a thrashing but I accnot see us winning at Anfield with this team, although the defence isnt too bad, its the midfield area, must admit I thought we’d see Flamini.

  3. Yup, i think u are right Joseph. Arsenal will never win trophy this season. They will loose tonight in the Carling Cup. I just cant see Liverpool losing again. I bet Steven Gerrard will beat us single handedly tonight.

I think Arsene is more concerned with ensuring that the team for Saturday is at full strength than progressing tonight. Although we have Adebayor and Gallas returning at the weekend, I would be surprised if either started at Ewood Park. I am slightly disappointed with the team though because I think he gone too much with youth. That said, a number of the players will be tired after Saturday because it was an evening KO, which because of the Christmas period means that they will have played on 23rd, 26th, 30th, 2nd, 6th and again tonight; 6 games in 18 days is asking a lot of players, particularly in the inclement conditions of this time of year.

Realistically, this is Liverpool’s last chance for a trophy this season so it is not surprising that Benitez has taken a different attitude towards the game. If they had won on Saturday I guarantee he would have chosen to rest most of his favoured XI (although with his record for tinkering I am not sure that he knows what it is).

My own view is that Arsenal should win every match they play, even if it was a Reserve Beekeepers Third XI Under 21 Discounting All Players With A Vowel In Their Surname Cup. Practicalities mean that sometimes that is more in hope than expectation and tonight is one of those times.

  5. thxs for the info. Now i know the arsenal team news, i’ll have a big bet on liverpool to win at 8/11. I think you gunners should do the same. COME ON LIVERPOOL

  6. The team we will put out tonight would stand a very good chance against all but the top 6/7 teams in PL. Unfortunately Liverpool are a top team so our prospects of success are slight but not without some hope.

If AW was keen to throw the match he wouldn’t include Cesc & Kolo. Like I said before we must accept this as a match without the pressure being on us.

Liverpool away is difficult with your best team, so why risk knackering your team and its confidence, by losing at Anfield.

The CL is still a target for ‘pool as well as us.

  7. What are the odds on Arsenal Shakeel?

  8. Flint

I don’t think he is keen to “throw” the match; just more concerned about the three other competitions that the club is in. All have higher prestige; Premiership and the CL are the top two in his mind, the FA Cup a “nice to have” based on previously winning it but the Carling Cup is a blooding ground and a stop-gap if there is no “real” silverware to be had. In fact I am not sure he even cares about it otherwise he would have put out stronger teams in previous seasons at the SF stage.

  9. Earlier on I saw them at 21/10 to win tonight

  10. Just seen another offering 4/1 for Arsenal.

  11. All right, I’ve taken the time out to upload all the goals:

All the goals from the game here.

  12. It’s a goal feast. 6-3 for Arsenal even without Henry. Arsenal are on fire right now and you can bet on them for any oncoming games. Bet on it!

  13. 6-3! Tennis scoreline and also a great game. Is this when Liverpool’s season will come undone completely?

  14. Just to say my 8 year-old son is a big fan of the Gunners (even though we live in Yorkshire) and he’s thrilled with their double victory over Liverpool!
I’ll certainly be adding your blog to my blogroll!

  15. CRIKEY!!!!

They scored quicker than Shane Warne in a room full of slappers!

  16. I’m a huge Juventus fan but I’m glad to say that I apreciate very much your blog and would like to link it to mine! Go gunners!

  17. That was a fantastic result considering that Arsene was basically almost playing with his second team.

    Speechless.
